Most enjoyable is the walk up the stairs and pathway behind the St. Peter Church to the Burg. There is a good "lookout" above the Burg where you can photograph, and you can walk almost all over the Burg. It is a Youth Hostel, also open to families, so keep that in mind when exploring.

Pleasant walk up from the old city of Bacharach, beautiful view over the Rhine river. No charge access. This is a youth hostel. Refreshments are available.

The village of Bacharach is beautiful during harvest season from the walk up to Burg Stahleck - the surrounding vineyards and river are magnificent !

It's was a 12century castle standing 520ft above the Rhine. Built by Archbishop of Cologe around 1135. Than during The Thirty Years War, the castle was conquered and sacked eight times. Again, during The War of Palatine Succession, the castle was totally destroyed. In 1925 the Architect Ernest Stahl, was contracted to built in the spirit of an old castle,... More

This burg is a hostel, so if you are not staying here, it is a destination for a short walk and that is all. We walked the town walls, about 20 minutes, up to the burg. There are OK views from up behind the castle. As far as I am concerned, this is simply a stop on a walk around... More

The views are worth climbing for, but since we had my 80+ year old parents with us, we drove. We all loved the great views of the Rhine and the city below. There were lots of backpacking youths staying at the hostel so it would be a great place to stay for students.

Made the trek up to Burg Stahleck during our weekend in Bacharach. Well worth the steep climb for the views of the city and the Rhine River. While we were there they were setting up for a wedding which is the true fairytale wedding in a castle! Only need an hour to for the walk and the views.

We had a lot of fun climbing up to visit this lovely old building. It's quite a hike, but great exercise and we got amazing shots of the town along the way.

Burg Stahlek overlooks Bacharach from high atop a hill. We admired it for 2 days from many angles before deciding to walk up for a closer look. We knew it was a youth hostel and therefore could not go inside but wanted to walk up to and around it. We took the steps right beside the church. It is a... More

We visited Bacharach just for an afternoon. It is lovely and Stahleck Castle was a beautiful lookout spot. Climb up the stairs near the church, stop at Wernerkapelle (a ruin but a nice one) and then follow the steps up into the forest before turning left (signs will tell you). Once you reached the castle you have breathtaking views across... More
