My family and I traveled to Atauro Island recently and stayed at the Compass dive camp there. We really enjoyed our trip and recommend it to other families! Atauro is a bare bones place where the living isn't always easy — but Compass takes care of their guests quite well. Accommodation and common areas are clean and comfortable, and each tent has a shaded 'porch' with a breezy view of the ocean. Food was good and very vegetarian-friendly, though I have to say that the grilled chicken/pork we had one night was super delicious! But the reason to go to Atauro isn't to eat the food or stay in your tent, the reason to go to Atauro is to get in the water, and Compass did a great job getting us there. Though it was the windy-and-wavy season, they made sure we had an incredible family snorkeling experience on the beautiful reef just off of Beloi. Compass staff Kib was so amazing with our kids, looking at the fish book with them multiple times in the lodge and then making sure they were having a good time in the water so I could go do some exploring without worrying about them too much. Our family also enjoyed exploring the beach (possible from the dive camp when the tide is low) and the kids liked getting to know the resident dog, chickens and goats. One of our kids now says their fondest dream is to stay at the Compass camp and help other people learn about the ocean. Well done, Compass!

Hello Joe and family! It brings us joy to read your review. Thank you so much for the time taken to write these kind words. Our team, especially Kib, are absolutely glad to have had the opportunity to facilitate your trip to the beautiful Ataúro and also share some of our passion for the ocean with the kids - their own curiosity and willingness to learn most definitely helped! We are more than looking forward to host you again on the island sometime in the future. Thanks!

We did the Discovery Dive in Atauro on a day trip. Great experience, from the booking to the pre-trip briefing to the trip itself. We felt completely safe throughout the experience because of clear and helpful directions from our Instructor Kib. Kib's patience and sense of humour made this my best learning experience in years. His passion for the reef and its biodiversity is evident! In addition, he took excellent underwater photos that we will treasure forever. Thanks also to Kib's colleague Nathalie who accompanied us, pointed out lots of wildlife and helped me not bump into anything! Well done Compass.

Big thanks to Cassio, Kib and the rest of the Compass crew for making our stay on Atauro such a great trip over New Year 2021. Cassio was great in helping work out an itinerary (both diving and non-diving), and transport options to-from Atauro. We appreciated his flexibility and tips. The accommodation is simple but comfortable with large canvas tents and double beds. The thatched roof keeps them remarkably cool. You also get your own hammock. The communal eating area was comfortable and really conducive to meeting the other guests staying at the resort. We’d heard from others that the food was great and it lived up to expectations. Lots of it, healthy, with a good variety for vegetarians. The diving was really well organised and we did many of the lovely reefs on the East coast of Atauro - including Manta Cove (my personal favourite with the amazing wall) and the house reef where we spied the elusive mandarin fish. Gear was in good condition and you always felt looked after and safe. Big thanks for making New Years Eve fun, despite the COVID restrictions. The campfire and midnight feast was a nice touch.

Hello Benita! This was super cool to read! Immensely glad to have been able to host you and also enjoy your willingness to hear more about (and ID more of) Ataúro wonderful marine life! Thanks for having joined us over NYE and glad to hear of your liking for Manta Cove. It is indeed a stunning site, especially, as you mentioned, the wall further North from the dropping point. Very much looking forward to host and dive with you again around our magical island. Including the western coast on a next adventure! Best,

I have stayed with Compass twice in their Adara campsite and once in Beloi, as well as having booked them for a whale watching tour on their catamaran. The crew is very hard working and lovely. They think of every detail and work out challenging logistics in transferring people and supplies back and forth from Dili. The accommodations are perfect - Adara is basic, remote, unplugged and breathtaking sunsets and Beloi is lovely, a lot of space, hot showers, gorgeous sunrises. The coral all around is world class. Once you snorkel here, you will be spoiled forever. Nothing compares. Great relaxing trips, hammocks, reading, beach walks, great meals. Their packages are a good deal - not the cheapest but nothing in Timor is and the well organized execution of your trips is worth it. Traveling around Timor is not always convenient or easy to plan - but Compass makes it so smooth with a few emails, you are all set! Highly recommend.
