Learned so much about early life on the Eastern Shore. A very hardy people, who overcame the elements to survive. Lots of exhibits of old time implements for harvesting the bounty of the sea.

Looking for something to do that's FREE. Yes, FREE! It's educational and It doesn't take alot of time. For years I've been coming to the Eastern Shore (ES) for business and going through to head north. I never took the time to stop and see what the ES had to offer. Well this year I did! I decided to take... More

We stopped here while visiting Cape Charles. It's right on rt. 13 and easily accessible to anyone driving by. It was so much more impressive than I expected from a small town museum. The upstairs is divided into rooms that are decorated in a way to make you feel as if you are in a hunting lodge or Victorian hotel.... More

Amazing museum full of interesting history and artifacts from the local area. Building itself is a fabulous piece of history, you can just imagine the all the wonderful people who lived there during the years it was a almshouse. Wonderful video about the lives of the last remaining barrier island inhabitants. Lots of great pieces that were rescued from some... More

This place breathes life into the past. It is not your typical boring museum. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the displays are well designed and interesting. Can't wait to bring the grandchildren here as they will love it!

The Barrier Islands Center is a hidden gem and a wonderful part of the community. They're dedicated to preserving the memories of the people that lived on the barrier islands off the Eastern Shore of VA until the mid 1930's. They feature wonderful videos and an incredible display of historical artifacts. The wall are decorated with fabulous pictures by aerial... More

We have been visiting the Virginia Eastern Shore for 20+ years. We have driven past the Barrier Islands Center (BIC) dozens of times, never stopping. It was only recently, with a couple of hours to "kill," that we stopped by the BIC. And, now, we will revisit and revisit and revisit. The first thing that you absolutely must do is... More

The Barrier Island Center represents the lives of the people who settled and worked the land. To understand the area, spend time with a docent and watch the films. Appreciate, also, the commitment to the present citizens through educational activities for all ages. A stop here allows one to see the water and land with a different perspective.
