Anne Spencer was a poet, gardener and civil rights worker during her 93 years. Kudos to the local visionaries who recognized the contributions of her husband, their family and Anne and moved soon after her death to make the home into a museum. Ninety-five percent of the contents were in the home when Anne lived there. Her granddaughter was our... More

An interesting place. Once again parking a problem. Spencer is an authentic Lynchburg poet. Her poems have been published in a book and her garden open to visitors. She is a recognized black poet and hosted many black writers and civil rights workers in the days when there were no motels open to them, This included Martin Luther King.

The home of noted Harlem Renaissance Poet Anne Spencer has been lovingly restored and maintained by Mrs. Spencer's grand daughter. The gardens were beautiful for this June 25th wedding! Lots of shade and beautiful flowers and foliage to be enjoyed by all! The wedding party enjoyed the house for dressing and photos. Add in that the weather was perfect with... More

Anne Spencer was a poet and gardener. Thanks to family and friends of the garden, one can walk through what was once a private paradise. All the garden rooms are meticulously restored and cared for and do go out of your way to experience it for yourself. If you are or want to be a gardener, this is a scale... More

The Anne Spencer House and Garden is a well kept space celebrating and commemorating Anne Spencer's life and works. In her day, Anne Spencer hosted many notables of the Harlem Renaissance and Civil Rights Movements. Her son grew up to become an honorable Tuskeegee Airman. Anne Spencer also tutored Ota Benga after he moved to Lynchburg (from the Bronx Zoo... More

This may be the way Anne would have wanted it. People young and old of all races and creeds reading poetry, and even belly dancing in her garden. Many thanks to Anne's granddaughter and the rest of the board for putting on the fun event.

What a treat to be given a tour of this lovely home by Anne Spencer's granddaughter. This home is a treasure trove of history and family. Lynchburg and the Ladies Garden Society is to be commended for restoring and protecting this for our enjoyment. And special thanks to the Spencer family for sharing. I will recommend it to all our... The museum or house is by appointment only. While the gardens my have been a testament to Anne Spencer they were small and underwhelming. A sketchy part of town as well!!

I can't say enough about this incredible experience. Shaun, Anne Spencer's granddaughter, spent over 2 hours giving a personal detailed account of the house, grounds and her grandmother's life as well as her own childhood experiences. Truly like stepping into someone else's life in every sense and the house is pretty much just the way Anne left it, almost as... More
