Informative and enjoyable

We found a jewel in Mineral City. Big Stone Gap, once called Mineral City for the rich deposits of coal and ore has a treasure sitting right out in the open. The SWVA Museum is a treasure to behold and a treasure trove of historical artifacts and information. The rangers and ladies who work there are super nice and knowledgeable. We went to take pictures of the decorated Christmas trees for our local community paper. We stayed and went back for the charm and times gone by architecture of the house and the hospitality of the people working there. We discovered a real treasure.

Very educational

This museum is amazing, not only the exhibits, but the house, itself, is probably the most interesting part of it all. The ladies working were very nice, helpful and informative. Definitely worth stopping for this.

We went for the pictures before my daughter's prom, and were not disappointed. I enjoyed the museum so much before the pictures were taken that I made a donation before leaving.

Charming but small

This museum is nicely cared for. The quilt exhibit was very interesting. It is definitely not accessible for folks with mobility issues because there are lots of steps everywhere you turn, and only one restroom on the basement level.

We added lifts to provide access to the basement and the first floor but any access higher up is problematic because it is an historic building. The basement bathroom is not accessible due to size but staff can make a non-public area available that has an accessible bathroom for someone in a wheelchair.

Great Museum.

Very good museum. Very knowledgeable park ranger on duty. We had an hour to kill before meeting up with an aunt. Could very easily had spent 2-3 hours. Probably will return to spend more time. Not an ideal place for kids as they would probably get bored and there are no hands on activities. In fact, a lot of items are HANDS OFF. Great for people interested in local history.

Visit was nice. Focus is on the coal miners and the industry. Very good information and understanding of how that area has grown.

Sponsors of the Gathering at the Gap
May 2018 • Couples
The staff of the Southwest Virginia Museum and other volunteers sponsor the Gathering at The Gap in May every year. The rangers at the Museum are personable and knowledgeable about the area and its history. The Gathering is a celebration of the area, the museum, the music, the history and the people. From Paul at Gate 1 to all the rangers in the park and the people in the town, your visit is sure to be a rollicking success even when the weather is a little stormy. Give yourself a treat any time of year but most especially at the Gathering at the Gap. Thanks to everyone.

House preserved as a State Park

We loved being able to tour this home on our own. The wood work is all hand carved and the workmanship it top notch. The items on display from the area really let you understand how the people in this far southwest corner of Virginia lived. They were getting ready for their quilt show and had the displays in place so we were able to view all the amazing quilts from very old ones to more recent. Definitely worth the time to stop in.
