Quaint Outdoor Drama
Jul 2019 • Couples
We had a great evening at this quaint outdoor production. The Quality Inn at Big Stone Gap is very nice and the premiere of the chain award winner. We visited the museums and an excellent winery close by “Mountain Rose”. The wines were award winning as well and delicious! We topped our visit with Natural Tunnel State Park a lovely experience without any strenuous walking!

Great local entertainment!
Jul 2019 • Couples
My husband & I went here on a date night recently. We really enjoyed it! We live in southwest, VA., but sadly never had a chance to see the show... After winning free tickets to the show online we decided to go see it. It’s a great play based on the book “Trail of the lonesome pine.” We went in the evening at 7:30pm & it was a beautiful night. Great story line & actors! We’re so lucky to have had this right in our back yard for years, & hopefully years to come!

Good Music!
Jul 2019 • Friends
For years I have wanted to see the play and finally did with a group of friends. The music was very good and I enjoyed the play. The actors are local and they have put in a lot of practice and time into their roles. We enjoyed ourselves and the only recommendation I can make is to take along some bug repellant as it gets dark and the bugs began to bite!

Great Entertainment and Gave a Feel for the History and culture
Aug 2017 • Couples
Enjoyed this outdoor, musical drama the other night on a beautiful evening to be outdoors.
They have local musicians present a short concert prior to the drama which was fun.
The drama was very quite well done - the singing and acting of the characters were of a high quality. It gave a good portrayal of the history and culture of this area.
We were very impressed that at the end of the show the cast came out in the audience and thanked us for coming. I felt that this was a very nice, personal touch.

Great Entertainment
Jun 2017 • Family
Set in the little town of Big Stone Gap, VA, the "Trail" drama is an excellent entertainment experience for the whole family. The theater is outdoors, yet intimate, since it seats fewer than 400. Seats are spacious & comfortable, & getting in & out isn't a problem. The production itself is well done - not exactly "professional" by most standards - but good enough to be thoroughly enjoyable. My only complaint is that the show seemed to run a little longer than necessary (2 1/4 hrs.), & that the other nearby attractions (Fox house, museum, etc.) all close hours before the show begins, making impossible to do it all at one visit. You'll enjoy the show more if you read the novel before seeing it, b/c it makes it easier to follow. Not all of the players were well-microphoned, making it a bit difficult to folloow the p;lot at points. But overall, a treat for all ages. We had our 3 young grandchildren with us, & they thoroughly enjoyed it.

A sweet small town experience.

Drove down from Pennsylvania and took my wife to see it on our anniversary. Paid extra and got the "Milk Glass Moon" seats. Scored major points with the Mrs. The staff and cast were wonderfully friendly and mixed with the audience after the show. I'll take this over Broadway any day.

Great Outdoor Drama

There aren't many outdoor plays left. Trail of the Lonesome Pine Outdoor Drama is a fantastic one. Great for everyone. Fun way to spend an evening. A neat look into old time mountain life. All volunteer cast and musicians.

A Fun, Educational Experience
Jun 2016 • Family
This is a great way to spend a nice evening in SWVA. We enjoyed the acting, and the passion that the actors put into their work. The story of the region is interesting, and it was a lot of fun for everyone to hear it presented in this manner.

A delightful small town experience
Jul 2016
Anyone who has seen the movie “Big Stone Gap” knows that one of the town’s claims to fame is their outdoor theater production of “Trail of the Lonesome Pine” based on a true story of a backwoods mountain girl and her neighbors and kinfolk. This delightful play which uses local townspeople as actors, musicians, ushers, and production staff has been running for 53 consecutive seasons! My wife and I bought tickets to see the play in July, but because of ferocious thunderstorms and flash floods that night, we were advised by the highway patrol to stay home! After considerable difficulty in reaching the box office to make other arrangements, I was contacted later by their public relations director who apologized for the communication snafu. She kindly offered us complimentary tickets which we used a couple of weeks later. Summer rainstorms—which usually pass quickly—are not uncommon in that area, so often a decision isn’t made about cancelling a show until a few minutes before showtime. Obviously it’s a good idea to buy “rain insurance,” which is an option when one purchases tickets on-line. My wife and I truly enjoyed the two-act production as well as the pre-show entertainment. The show features quite a large cast, colorful and authentic costumes, beautiful sets complete with a small waterfall in front, comfortable seats, and live music incorporating some genuine Appalachian folk music. In an age of slick Hollywood productions, it is indeed a refreshing change to experience a taste of home-grown talent and be able to sense first-hand the pride this small town feels as they continue their outdoor theater tradition each summer. Don’t miss it!

Thank you for your kind review. We are glad that we were able to make your visit right, and we are so glad that you enjoyed your experience. We appreciate your advice to future patrons about our rain insurance option. Mountain storms can come and go quickly, and we regret that they interfere with performances at time. We hope to see you again in the Gap!

Aug 6 the most amazing night under the stars, watching front row TOTLP
Aug 2016 • Couples
It has been on my bucket list and we are so glad we watch on the front row, The Trail of the Lonesome Pine play in its 53rd year. This outdoor drama is a ONE OF A KIND experience. The volunteer actors are AWESOME, the songs are BEAUTIFUL. Highly recommend, easy to find, get there early for pre show. All seats are the best in the house. It is a great story. I love my fairy stone.
