Loved seeing it and I know monks are peaceful people but I wish there was even a plaque about the battle here from the Civil War time. Monk however very friendly and the chapel and house the latter seen from the outside very attractive and inspiringly tranquil.

Literally, this has to be heaven on earth! The beauty of God's work (scenery), the peacefulness, the ability to be still and mediate. Visit for a weekend, stop for awhile after work, go when you just need peace around you.

This is a "silent" retreat that allows you to read, meditate and relax without any structure or meetings to go to. Evening meals always had a reading by one of the Monks and was welcomedas we ate in silence. food was simple and good. The surroundings are lovely and perfect for solitutide. I took my camera and took many photos... More

Perfect place to reflect. Did not come for reflection though, but to shop the gift shop manned by a gentle Trappist priest. Bought two fruit cakes, biscotti, port wine jelly and some religious materials. A truly beautiful and peaceful spot.

A visit to Holy Cross Abbey, in passing, is to the fleet of foot a seemingly tiny outpost of brethren. When you live nearby and abide near and next to those who are your neighbors, you start to understand why even the cats adore them. The bookstore, the weekly mass, the walks, and the birds all congregate to celebrate the... More

On our way back from Luray, we stopped by to visit the abbey. They have a nice gift store. Buy the chocolate covered fruit cake - delicious. The Jellies are good too. Books, statues, candy, ceramics are some of the other items for sale. The chapel is open for you to visit as well as the prayer times of the... More

I was nervous about spending a weekend in silence among the monks, especially since my traveling companion is a devout Catholic and I am not. But the complete lack of agenda, the peaceful setting and the spiritual nature of the place provided the most refreshing weekend I have ever experienced. Brother James greeted us and explained that there were no... More

approximately 90 minutes west of the urban jungle of DC through the suburban sprawl of Northern Virginia is an oasis in space and time... well worth the side trip. wander the grounds, enjoy the quiet, punctuated by the calls of birds. sit on the bank and watch the Shenandoah River flow by and again, relish the quiet. respect the monks... I stayed three nights over a weekend. The reviews you read are just visitors and tourists (to be fair, yes, I was a tourist, but in a different way). In my opinion, they write more than they will ever see. "Beautiful place to pop in for a visit". "A cute little visit". "Not a fruit cake person and their choc.... More

We were seeing the sights of Berryville, VA area and we stopped the Abbey's gift shop. It is a lovely ride to the Abbey and we did not travel beyond the shop to see the Abbey building. We spoke with the Monk who was minding the store. It was a cute little visit!
