I must confess, during the long drive I had second thoughts. "Do I really want to go all this way?" The historic site is really in the middle of nowhere, far from the freeways and cities. But once we arrived, I was excited. This is...More

If you enjoy learning about the nation's history, and don't mind driving a good half hour from the closest town of any size, this is a great trip. Both the historical site of the "Golden Spike" itself, and the locomotive house, were well worth the...More

This is one of those places that is 30 minutes off the beaten path and out of the way, off I 84/15, yet well worth the visit. The recreation of the engine meeting is on hold until early Sept. due to a broken track and...More

The biggest problem with this "historic site" is that everything is a recreation. The railroads stopped using these tracks in 1904, and the tracks were removed completely in 1942. Locomotive 119 was scrapped in 1903, while the Jupiter was scrapped in 1909. The park today...More

If you dig the story of the Transcontinental Railroad, you gotta go. Everyone say's its in the middle of nowhere, but really, it's not so bad. Anyway, about 20 miles off the highway, very easy to find. Good expo center with artifacts and exhibits, and...More

An underrated, but important historic site. If you have no background on the subject I would not only take part in one of the ranger tours. Has a train ride from replicas of the original trains that converged at this point as part of the...More

We loved attending the Golden Spike Driving of the Spike Reenactment! We had elderly grand parents, younger kids, teenagers,, and we all loved the program and the visitors center with the interactive displays. Amazing how they built a railway unifying both coasts in the 1860's!...More

We decided to stop and see the golden spike on our way from Idaho to Utah passing thru Salt Lake. The drive is in the middle of nowhere but roads are paved. Disappointed that the trains weren't running as a portion of the track was...More

It's a bit off the path to anywhere so you have to make a special trip. There isn't much left of what was once Promontory as a town, but the history and presentations are interesting. My favorite part was driving the East Loop along a...More

Less than an hour and a half drive out of Salt Lake City this is an interesting little national historic site. As stated by a previous reviewer, the trains were not on site but rather down the road for maintenance. However, we were directed to...More

Driving out to the location will take up some time, I would recommend mapping it to help plan how long the drive will be. Depending on the time of year they will have the trains running so that could increase the amount of... More

We stayed in our RV at Willard Bay State Park, about a 40-minute drive away. There are other privately owned RV campgrounds closer, though we liked the amenities at the state park better.
