If you get fed up with the crowds and high prices at Bryce and Zion, Kodachrome is a great alternative. The hike to Shakespeare's Arc and Sentinel was very muddy so I recommend wearing rubber boots in the winter. It's just as pretty as Bryce and Zion yet a lot less strenuous because the hikes are not as steep.

There are a number of trails in the park - we hit parts of four of them...here are some highlights: Grand Parade Trail: This is the first main trail you hit as you drive along the main route within the park. To the west, is the much longer Panorama Trail. To the east is Grand Parade. This trail covers about... More

Kodachrome Basin is a lesser known attraction in southwestern Utah near Bryce Canyon National Park. In it you will find "hoodoos" (rock spires) such as in Bryce, only not quite as many or as spectacular. You will also find plenty of solitude. I hiked 5.9 miles on Panorama Trail (a series of three interconnected loops) on a weekday afternoon in... More

We were staying in Tropic and wanted something to do before dinner, so we decided to venture out to Kodachrome Basin State Park. We were very glad that we did. The park was quiet and had beautiful sunset views. Although it doesn't have the same magnitude as other surrounding sites such as Bryce Canyon, we appreciated the combination of beauty... More

Kodachrome Basin State Park is a small oasis 9 miles off Hwy 12 at Canondale Utah. It's a small park but well worth the diversion for half a day if you have the time. Some great short hikes and beautiful scenery. A very nice campground if so inclined.

The hook-up sites were full, but the tent sites were fairly empty. This may have helped keep it quiet. We were in site 6, which had easy bathroom access without being the pathway for everyone else. There is a lawn next to the bathrooms, with bunnies everywhere. Bathrooms were clean. Showers were more warm than hot, but the stalls were... More

We arrived just in time for sunset and this was gorgeous! It is a relatively short hike but is steep in spots. Several other people were enjoying sunset at the same time and the colors on the rock were impressive.

My main reason for visiting Kodachrome was the 67 'sand pipes' or 'sprires' which are unique to this park. These are very interesting for the geologist and photographer and are easily accessed from numerous trails around the park. My favourite was Ballerina Spire on the Panorama Trail where there were quite a few flowers still in bloom. We walked part... More

Hidden amidst a series of beautiful but busy national parks, this state park is a bit off the beaten track but well worth the trip. It is not far from Bryce Canyon National Park and is hosted by friendly rangers who are quite knowledgeable about the surrounding sites. A beautiful park, with truly photogenic scenery, this park should be part... More

If you are sightseeing Southern Utah you would probably be hitting the major National Parks, Bryce, Zion, Capitol Reef etc. Those are mobbed by fellow tourists, so small State Parks nearby though not as well known could offer incredibly quiet and peaceful alternatives. We stayed at Kodachrome for only 5 hours and wished for more. A full day plus camping... More
