Stopped for a couple of hours at this out-of-the-way historical site. Scenic Hwy 290 leads to the Fort, located between Sheffield and Ozona. Visitor center has an excellent 5-minute film telling the story of the fort as well as outstanding exhibits and artifacts. The self-guided tour of the ruins of the buildings has excellent story-boards with both drawings and text.... More

The fort is actually just ruins but it is worth a visit for history lovers. Very easy walking among the ruins or the have golf carts for you to drive. Nice stop. New center and informative staff. Exhibits with a short film. Nice drive from interstate to get there.

This fort is completely in ruins. It is a little different from the other forts that have been reconstructed but non the less is still worth the stop if you like history. It is interesting to walk around the ruins and imagine how life must have been here so long ago. Sign help to educate along the walkway and there... More

Driving across West Texas, made a short detour off I-10. Well worth the time. Newer visitor center with great staff; golf carts available to 'check out' at no additional charge, which made the tour fairly quick and fun. Immaculate grounds with good signage. Great for history buffs.

This is no where near Crockett tx even though it shows up on the things to do there. It is actually located in west Texas near I10 but looks cool.

Forts interest me as I am an Army Brat. A buddy and I were on a motorcycle trip and this road looked interesting, which it was. We ran across this fort by accident so we took a look. We were a little disappointed that it was not ran by the Parks and Wildlife as we had passes for them. The... More

Ft.Lancaster is really not that far off the beaten path, but it seems like it when you are standing there on the parade grounds. It's just a side loop of IH-10, and well worth the short drive. We were coming east on IH-10 when we saw the sign, 13 miles to Ft. Lancaster, and we thought, ok, let's go see... More

This was an interesting post, where no one else seemed to go. I was the first visitor they had in 2 days. It is only 10 miles or so off I 10, anyone interested in frontier forts should at least stop in. There was not much to see here, all off the buildings were rubble, and signs pointed out what...
