I can only attest to the incredible customer service at the ranger station to which I made several phone calls in the past week. While in Houston on business, I paid a visit to the park, on a circuitous trip to Bush Airport, to secure my 'lifetime senior pass' to all National parks, forests and monuments. The park is easy... Sam Houston National Forest is exactly as many people have described on Trip Advisor. However, unless I missed something, it wasn't so great for day hiking. I tried a number of different trailheads designated for the "multi-use" trails but they all were dominated by dirt bikes. Many of the other trailheads were blocked off for maintenance. The Lone Star Trail... More

Spring Break provided my two adult daughters and I an opportunity to test out our skills and fitness and we hit the trail. Next year we want to attempt a thru-hike of the Lone Star Trail, but for our initiation we chose to hike around Lake Raven on 40 West, just across from the huge statue of Sam Houston. Originally... Enjoyed our camping visit at Cagle Recreation Area. Able to do kayaking. Didn't catch but one fish but not a fisherman, anyway. Hiking was pretty nice. Hadn't realized that Lake Conroe is connected to the park. Shower/Bathrooom facilities were clean. Variety of birds are aplenty there. Woodpecker. Cardinal. Saw a eagle/hawk (one of those) swoop down and grab a fish... More

The forest is huge with lots of hiking trails. The recreation area is clean. We wished there were more to do besides hike and fish. Scenery is beautiful. Excellent access to Lake Conroe.

This is a very nice National Forest campground. It is located on the northern part of Lake Conroe with close access to the lake. There are 2 camping loops and a total of 47 camp sites. All of the campsites are spacious and shady under tall pine trees and lively oak trees. Most of the RV pads are completely level;... More

We spent a week at Cagle campground. It is a good thing they limit the length of time you can stay because no one would ever leave. RV sites had plenty of room. They had great walking paths through the woods and by the lake. The camp hosts were all friendly and helpful. Will definitely miss it.

Cagle Recreation Area is a campground in the Sam Houston National Forest. The sites have full hook-ups and are really nice. There are two different loops of campsites. One of the loops has lake-view campsites. Great place for a get-away with the family. Very peaceful.
