One can visit this place 5 times a day. In theory.

Having read past reviews about difficulty in entering (few guided visits per day only), we checked in advance at what times the tours are scheduled. However, when we arrived shortly before the published visit hour, the ticket office was empty and closed. There was no information whatsoever about any change, either on their website, or at the ticket office.

We waited for 40 minutes, as our next visit was only available later. In the meantime other tourists, both Italian and foreign, came and went. The employee finally arrived after the 40 minutes. It turned out the scheduled tour did not take place, as there was a conflicting group visit reserved at that time.

Apparently, it was too much for them to put up any information. They clearly do not care about individual tourists. The employee even said it out lod ("I do not care"). Admittedly, she tried to take it back once she realised how badly it sounded and how it impacted the discussion, which got quite heated afterwards. It is clear however that is exactly their attitude.

This place does not deserve our attention, time, and money.

It was made clear one can not expect to be able to enter at the published scheduled hour without a prior reservation. In additon, we were told that the tours are in English only.

Instead of waiting on the parking lot, go to a beach. Or anywhere, really, your time will be better spent.

Good views - Lots of stairs to climb

World War 1 fort - There is a car park & office at the bottom where you buy tickets. Then a little walk uphill to the fort entrance, entrance is with a guide. There are a lot of steps to the top, from which there are good views. Worth the small entrance fee, but you need to be reasonably fit !

Prior our visit to La Fortezza di Monte Altura, I emailed the information center of the fortress at itinere.palau@tiscali.it

I asked them what were the opening hours to visit the place.

I was given the hours for the tours with a guide, but at no time I was told the visits were ONLY with a guide.

Mind you there are only 5 tours per day and there is a 1 to 2 hours wait between each tour.

The place is completely closed between visits and everyone has to wait at the gate under the scorching sun.

The level of amateurism skyrockets there.

Tourists should be warned on the website about the peculiar set up of the visit.
Specially when they called prior their visit to avoid such unpleasant surprises.

I did not want to wait the guide's return under the sun for one hour with my senior parents.

I complained about it but no one cared to answer or even take in consideration my suggestions to improve the experience for future visitors.

I am really chocked that such place is ran by such amateurs and people with such little consideration for tourist who came a long way to visit the Fortress.

Immersion into Fortress Living
Jun 2017 • Family
More than visiting 'just a fortress' our guide - he spoke Italian only and I had to translate - gave us a tour by detailing how soldiers lived in the fort, the kind of weaponry used, how the defence was organised, where soldiers slept, where they showered and he enhanced everything with such details as to really bring us back a century. We had a very interesting 40 minutes long guided tour that I can only recommend.

If you don't know Italian, you may want to call in advance and check if there's an English guide. Alternatively, you may try and download a translation app on your smartphone

Ticket: €5,00 per person

BONUS if you love photography, go for the last tour as it ends close to the golden hour in August. If you can't, don't worry, you can make some high-contrast photography too

I really enjoyed going here. The first problem is the rather irregular hours the place is open. As others have pointed out, it's only open at specific times for a guided tour. Also, because it is a guided tour of the place you only get to stay there for the 45min-hour tour. It was quite rushed in a way. Packed full of information but it would have been nice to have been allowed an extra 15-20 mins wondering around after the tour. During the tour if you hang around to look at something, the whole group has to wait around for you to catch up which is a tad awkward. Other than that, I still recommend a visit if you want a break from the beach

Be aware of the hours they're open.

We visited the site when we were in Palau. Unfortunately when we arrived at the facility it was closed. Apparently it has set hours and other times there is only a guide so that if he's giving a tour the office is closed and you have to wait We did take a walk around the facility and there are some nice views. It looks like there is enough at the fort to make it worthwhile to get a guided tour if it could be done expeditiously

Good bit of history

Well worth a look. A guided tour, currently €5 for adults, €2.50 for children, lasting 30 - 40 minutes. Tour given in Italian and English, apparently, but as we were the only visitors on the 10:15 tour, we only got the English!

Tour guide was an historian and had been there for about 5 years, so knew the fort and presented the information well.

Would have like to have a bit more time to look around but other than that, a good visit with some beautiful views over the surrounding coastline..

Interesting piece of history, stunning view over the sea

Interesting piece of Italian history and a stunning view, worth the climb! 171 steps (according to our guide) with a stopover halfway. Impressive granite boulders all over the area, massive and with rather strange shapes.

Well worth a visit if you are nearby. Excellent guided tour and interesting history behind this fortress that was built to defend against the French from the north. Beautiful and spectacular views of Palau, the islands on the other side, and on a good day, Corsica.
