This has been the worst “holiday” I personally have ever experienced. I find it hard to find words to describe this “experience” that literally brought me to tears from sleep deprivation.
Our trip was booked well over a year ago in hope of sometime together as a couple whilst our pre-school children were in ski school.
The holiday was torture with our pre-school children being witness to drunken disorderly behaviour and foul language from the mid afternoon onwards inside and outside our “Luxury” accommodation. We had purposely avoided booking in the centre of town to ensure a peaceful break. The witnessed behaviour started during the afternoon bottomless brunches, followed by loud pounding music from the evening until 2 am in the morning. We continued to be awoken through the night by party goers.
Having checked the event website listed in a previous review, I was not able to find a map of the event so it is not clear if there was any way of predicting the location of the main stage, “indoor club” which was a large gazebo with NO soundproofing. Also please see attached screen shot of event page that states music goes on til 11pm… I could not find any mention of 2am! I do not feel the webpage indicates the true nature of the event to families planning a holiday.
Needless to say we left, a very expensive mistake that I do not wish others to go through. I also felt so sorry for the hotel staff and residents of the village.

Blue sky day, no wind, perfect light fresh snow - most lifts closed. The reason: staff cleaning chairlifts as late as 11:30 in the morning. Overcrowded resort, expect all fresh snow lines to be gone after 1hour. Expect to wait 20 minutes to get up every chairlift. Not coming back. Ever.

Hello Elsa,
We are sorry about your disapointment about our ski resort.
For security reasons, the skilift company and its teams do their best to secure and offer the best ski resort to all riders. Sometimes, it takes more time than skiers expectations.
We hope you enjoyed your stay in Avoriaz 1800,
Best regards.

We came for years with the children, renting. The resort on foot, without a car, despite the price of parking, transfers (folklore) and the very approximate insulation of the accommodation we rented did not prevent us from finding this pleasant family resort.
For 3 years, we have chosen the hotel, as a couple and come outside of school holidays... to have fewer people. This year, a big mistake, a flood of young people who are not necessarily educated... and above all, not a restaurant without loud music, the Hôtel des Dromonts a priori in a quiet area drowned out by the infernal music of the Igloo village. In fact it’s no longer a ski resort, it’s an open-air nightclub… during the day. So, despite the pleasure of skiing where we spent so many good times with our children, it is far from certain that we will come back!

Bonjour,

Not sure how you could get any better.
We were given the names of their instructors when booking and were v happy they were both native English speakers. The groups weren’t too big and they had put ages and abilities together well.
Our 11 year old son said “Really nice, really chatty, he takes time to do it well. He stops to teach and explain. Everything you’d want from a teacher and more. It was clear he enjoys what he does and cared. He taught detail and reason behind things which I found very helpful and interesting. Thank you.”
Our daughter (9) said kind, caring, fun and really good instruction.
We liked that they also taught the children the safety elements of skiing. Thank you very much indeed Ian and Mark. We were so happy we took time to read enough reviews to track down such a great school.

The nicest thing about Avoriaz was the friendliness of the local people in cafes, shops, hotels, ski lift attendants although please make a bit of effort to speak some French even if it is not much. The worst things about the resort, and reasons I will not go back:
1. Dog dirt EVERYWHERE. It’s disgusting.
2. Slopes are too narrow. Plus you ski away from the resort, not back to it at the end of the day so you really need to watch the time and when the lifts close.
3. Safety patrols/cameras would be a good thing. Slopes and conditions are not always the best.
4. Many kids are in lessons although often left because there are not enough ski instructors per group. My husband was randomly asked to look after someone else’s children on a chair lift!! I have never seen so many kids in a group snake down a mountain in one line.
5. Ski instructors can be very rude in ski lift queues to the point I was pushed out of the way and seperated from my 8 year old son, resulting in an altercation - ESF ski. Priority is fine but it’s the way they go about it.

Thank you for your comment. We are sorry if your stay in Avoriaz was not as pleasent as expected.
Avoriaz is exclusively pedestrian, and so entirely skiable. This unique quality should facilitate your way back home with your ski on feet.
It is common that kids in ski group take the chairlift with other adults as there is usually only one instructor for a group. However your are not ask to tend to the need of the child. At the departure and arrival of everylift, a skiman/woman is here to help the kids to get on and down the skilift.
We are sorry you experience difficulties in our queue. The amount of ski shcools in Avoriaz can also be explained by the snow conditions in other ski resorts which are driving other ski schools towards us.
Have a good day, see you soon in Avoriaz !

This is the second year we have come in the summer. It is a great resort with an excellent welcome, the multi pass is an exceptional asset. With cinema, hiking, mini golf, aquariaz, chairlifts or gondola lifts you can go to Switzerland or to the beautiful lake of montriond. The goat village. Restaurants ummm... I forget the archery with Yannick that allowed my severely handicapped daughter to make some arrows for free and with pedagogy.
The carriage is also very nice to discover resort. I congratulate all the station staff as well as the traders.
You have to be difficult not to join.

Overcrowded ski area and ski lifts absolutely not suitable for the number of people. We wait 20 to 30 minutes in each lift at the resort. the area is quite poorly connected and poorly indicated

Bonjour,

Family stay in a resort which has clearly abandoned its family side. A resort that highlights its eco-friendly side without a car but with a stream of scooters and chasers with noisy thermal engines circulating from 6 a.m. until late in the evening. What about the 100 euros for covered parking and the 27 euros for handling your luggage in the unloading/loading area which looks like a shambles, the organization is very far from efficient.
The positive points of this resort are the snow cover, the preparation of the slopes, the restaurants "la Réserve/le chapka" and the friendly and welcoming shopkeepers.
What surprised us the most when we arrived was that this resort has become the winter counterpart of Saintes Maries de la mer.
In conclusion, it was a discovery for us but we will not repeat the experience.

Bonjour,

The town is very nice. The slopes are quite sprawling and it feels like you are traversing a lot of the time. It's fun going between Switzerland and France. The Swiss wall is a fun slope but not as challenging as you might be led to believe.

We are staying at L’Amara end of Feb with our children 8 and 5 who haven’t skied before. Evolution 2 meeting point looks to be on the other side of the village and I’m really worried about getting them there in the mornings. Even I will struggle to walk in ski boots and carry my skis, let alone theirs. Realistically how far is the walk and are there any other options e.g. storing skis closer. Also what time do the lifts open? Thanks.
Written 12 February 2022
Good morning Helen,
Thank you for contacting us and for the interest you have in visiting our destination.
Amara residence is not far away by skis to get to Evolution 2 meeting point.
You'll need to walk 5min max to get to the Plateau area and then put your skis on to go down the Dromonts green slope that brings you to their meeting point. You can come to our Tourist office so we can show you on a map as soon as you arrive !
Safe travels and see you very soon in Avoriaz 1800!

Is there a public gym / treadmill in avoriaz? Thanks!
Written 29 February 2020
No, there is no gym anymore and I have complained and asked for the return of a gym with fitness classes. There are 3 options : Aquaiaz , a massive swimming pool with a river and hundreds of trees where Aqua classes are offered 5 days a week (as of January 2020). Unfortunately, it is more for older ladies who hate to be splashed and get their hair wet!!! Go to the back and exercise as you wish.
Secondly, there are Yoga and Qigong classes in the evening in the former fitness studio, close to Aquariaz.
Finally, there are 2 Squah courts and a bike in the original Gym located at the top of Main Street before the Tourist office. You need to get a key from the Tourist office when you pay them.
Hope it was useful. Just hoping that Fitness classes and weights come back one day.

Private transfer from Geneva Airport to the Prodains gondola to get into resort all information would be greatly appreciated and prices tia
Written 30 November 2019
Transfers from Geneva to Avoriaz. You can just use a search engine like Google for this but the names I know are Alpybus and Poerdercab. Some transfers take you to the Prodains cable car, which is below Avoriaz itself and closer to Morzine. Others to the the Station itself but the edge of it as the town is carfree. The Prodains arrives at the bottom end of Avoriaz town. Transfers to Avoriaz itself arrive at the top end of town. But almost certainly you will need a snow taxi within Avoriaz from either. These too can be searched on the web but should be contactable at either location providing you plan to arrive at a sensible time.

While I have not been myself, anyone looking for spa facilities could take a look at the Aquariaz in Avoriaz. If you search with for example Google the Aquariaz this gives details of their facilities including a section on their Spa. It is part of the website for the resort as a whole.
