El e Escorial is intimately connecedar to Spanish royalty. Started by King Philip I I It has many historic connections. It's massive scale was overwhelming, especially the basilica. The no photo policy, even without a flash was disappointing.

It is a short trip out from Madrid to get here. You can day trip it but I recommend sleeping over. The audio guide is well worth getting as it offers interesting detailed information.

The monastery is large with many different sections, the monastical, the royal residence, many beautiful rooms and lots of history. A beautiful place to visit and a good day-trip from Madrid.

El Escorial is about an hour outside Madrid. We took the train from Sol Station that runs hourly. The station at El Escorial is about a 20-30 minute walk (slightly uphill) from the Monastery. It's worth booking tickets up front to be sure but the...More

There are trains for sure. Do a little research on line to find the nearest train station to your location and departure times. Travel time from Toledo is several hours so if you want to visit both El Escorial and Valle de... More
