one needs longer than one thinks - the staff in the entrance hall/bookshop are very helpful - it's unusual to be given a headphone guide as a compulsory part of the tour - but refreshing not to be charged extra for them. You don't need them straight away, they are only necessary for the ground floor and gardens. the top... More

Its only once I reached Down House that I knew I wanted to visit the place, we went as we had a spare day on our hands, it ended up being a great day, a true insight into a great mans life, there are not many attractions I visit more than once, the home of Charles Darwin is one I... More

Being in the home of the iconic figure is just amazing. You can visit his green house, his garden and also learnt that apart from being a genius, he still managed to be a great husband and an adored father. Have a stroll on his estate and be inspired.

We often drop in to Downe House and whilst we don't always visit the house the gardens have something to offer all year round.

The house where Charles Darwin lived and worked is an easy daytrip from London via train from Victoria and a local bus. You can travel the whole way on Oyster Card (although unlike some places, there's no discount if you come via public transportation). The house itself is divided into two sections. The top floor is a series of exhibits... More

We visited the house with our six year old grandson. Made very welcome by reception and entrance staff and started tour upstairs as requested where our grandson took interest in bird collection. The man on duty encouraged him and pointed some of particular interest out and gave him a torch. At this point what I can only describe as at... More

Hi Malcandliz Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Tripadvisor. I am so sorry to hear that your experience at Down House was tainted by the behaviour of one of our volunteers on the first floor. This certainly is not the type of service I would expect from any of the team here whether they are... More

English Heritage has done fantastic work with this property. On the lower floor there are rooms beautifully restored and maintained, including Darwin's office, the dining room and a sitting room. Upstairs is a combination of display rooms (much more interesting than that sounds!) and restored rooms. The large gardens are separated into different areas: an outdoor laboratory and abandoned tennis... More

Visited on Origin Day last year using our 2 for 1 Gardeners' World cards. Attended the three talks on the house, the garden and the family. Ate lunch in the cafe. The weather wasn't great, so we didn't explore the garden. Had a really enjoyable, interesting day. The talks made the day.
