Lots of birds

We went to the big Rio Grande Birding Festival in Nov. It is a BIG operation and some of the sessions are crowded..but the people were nice and helpful, and the birds were great.

We saw more species of birds in 20 minutes than at some other locations we had been. Nice park and close to town. The World Birding Center includes several other parks, such as Estero Llano Grande, Benson-Rio Grande and South Padre Island Nature and Birding Center. All of them are great for birders and nature lovers in general

The park known locally as Hugh Ramsey is a great place to visit for sighting birds and native vegetation. The trails border the Arroyo Colardo River as well.

We loved to visit this location. We are not birders, but just walking on the board walk and seeing the wildlife in and out of the water was refreshing.

While in Harlingen we went to a few of the birding centers. Found this very relaxing to walk around and got to see some nice birds from one of the viewing areas.

This birding center has is very wooded, and has lots of trails to explore. There is an amazing variety of birds to be seen especialky in the cooler hours of the morning. Ocelots, coyotes, Javelins (wild pigs) and water snakes are frequently seen here.b Don't let that out you off, if you don't bother the animals, they won't bother you... More

Check it out if you're in the area. They take pride in making it a good birding experience. It's a very pleasant place even if you're not a birder.

There is not a ton of trails but I believe they are working on expanding the trails. Regardless, plenty of water and they put feed out so a very varied array of birds are likely, especially if the volunteers have just fed. Several birding blinds are available for use and very family friendly.

This is just a small part of the World Birding Center - there are several, one in SPI, Weslaco, and others. Each one has its own special-ness. This is a peaceful quiet place, perfect for walks and seeing wildlife.

Needing a shady place to go walking, the wife and I chose the newly redone World Birding Center. They have done a great job of sitting areas in the shade, bird watching areas, and walking paths. Still would avoid this on a hot summer afternoon.
