In the past you could get out and watch the waves....look for dolphins...watch the seagulls all for free. Due to COVID they ask everyone to stay in their cars....makes sense and is safest.

It cut off a bit of time, but was interesting. Teenagers thought it was cool and sent snaps back to their friends.

This was a fun adventure we’ve never done before - drove our car on a ferry to ride. Easy access & a quick ride to Port Bolivar. Watching their website really helped us know when the wait wasn’t long. We also saw a lot of dolphins.

It is convenient to sit in your car but it is over a 30 minute wait in both directions on weekends during nice weather. It is free and a nice way to take a boat trip. About a 10-15 minute boat trip. That said, it is practical, not touristy. There is no real food or bathroom option once you reach the peninsula from Galveston so plan ahead. I didn't see if there were restrooms on the ferry but it is a short ride so not a good use of time to search. Bring snacks and drinks for kids. It is probably better to get out of your car and avoid the wait if you are with kids that need a toilette. There is a food mart with port a potty on the peninsula but not a great option. Plan ahead for this one and it will be more enjoyable.
