Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Excellent food and hospitality. The host, Henna, is friendly and really helpful. I recommend this place to everyone who visits Valtimo or Nurmes.

This was the second guest house on our Ski tour which included 3 other guest houses. We arrived after a 22 km ski from the previous guest house to the North (Guest House Puukarin Pysakki – see separate review) and stayed a second night before heading south to Majatalo Pihlajapuu (also a separate review).

We stayed at Laitalan Lomat for 2 nights. The guest house comprises a set of separate buildings, and we were in the one called the “Grey House”, which included three bedrooms, two upstairs and one down. The location is scenic, overlooking open fields.

On arrival, somewhat tired, we found the welcome warm and friendly, with the propietress, Henna, taking charge of us and providing a welcome snack.

We were in an upper room of the Grey House. This did pose something of a challenge as the spiral, wooden staircase was extremely steep and indeed when we entered the house they looked more like a ladder! Presumably by chance, the older members on the tour had the most challenging rooms! The bedroom was larger and could have slept four. The beds were comfortable, once we negotiated the wooden rims, and the room had plenty of storage. A nice feature of our accommodation was the downstairs sitting come kitchen area with a large Television which had a good range of programmes in English. There was one shared toilet and shower (the shower being rickety but functional). Wifi in the Grey house was a bit intermittent, but fast in the main building.

The main building included a comfortable set of sofas and chairs at one end (most welcome after the long ski), with the dining area along one side of the building. The sauna was reached via either the dining room or from outside. There is no dedicated ski room, but ski preparation could be undertaken in the corridor outside the sauna. The sauna was most welcome, both on the afternoon of arrival and after a reasonably short circular trip the next day.

As at the other guest houses the food was locally sourced and traditional with Henna introducing each of the dishes. An additional bonus was the short walk in the morning to see, feed and be photographed with her reindeer whilst been informed on the local community.

I spent 2 nights here - whilst on a mini tour of Finland. The hostess, Henna, was charming and informative. I had a lovely room and the food was excellent - great breakfasts. Henna showed me how to make a cordial from Black currant leaves and we even made some herbal cream!
Henna took me for a canoe ride along the river which flows at the bottom of the property - there are even reindeer!
