Belle Meade Plantation is a non-profit historic site located in Nashville, TN. Established in 1807, Belle Meade was revered as the greatest thoroughbred stud farm in the United States. It was home to Iroquois, the first American bred horse to win the Epsom Derby and the great foundation sire,Bonnie Scotland, whose descendants include Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Native Dancer, Big Brown and California Chrome. Belle Meade was owned and operated by the Harding-Jackson family for nearly a century from 1807 until 1906. Today their home is restored to its turn of the century appearance along with several original outbuildings.

Tour guide explained very well how this plantation survived the Civil War as it bred, trained and sired its thoroughbred horses. Grounds themselves were a treat to roam through and the inclusion of the Black experience reminded one of how gifted black people, sadly enslaved, made it...More

I would highly recommend if you are a thoroughbred enthusiast, a history geek, or just would like an interesting 1/2 day. Begin your day or finish your day at the Harding House restaurant. The official house tour is very informative, but not overbearing. The trinkets...More

The tour is about the rise of the Harding family. 99% of the tour recounts stories of success in the thoroughbred boarding and breeding business. 1% of the tour covers the enslaved and recently freed people upon which the business was built. At the end...More

We did not do Belmont so I cannot comment on that. Between Belle Meade and the Hermitage, both very interesting and both very different. Belle Meade is larger and you can actually enter the rooms in the home, whereas The... More

How long does this tour take? I've already purchased tickets for a 10:30-11:15 tour on a weekday. We definitely want to do the wine tasting when the tour ends. Friends of mine have invited us to have lunch at a restaurant about 20 min. away from the Plantation at 1:30 the same day. Will we be able to meet them? Thanks
