PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY. Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne. Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s. Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

I guess this means very much to Australians and a lot of respect to the nice people keeping the whole thing running. But as a visitor to Australia it felt very touristy and a little overpriced.

The Puffing Billy train trip is still a very worthwhile excursion. The shorter trip takes about 3 hours while the longer one is 5 hours. We went on the Belgrave to Lakeside return trip and had a light lunch at the turning point. While the...More

We were lucky to have a perfect sunny day which was great on these 100 year old open window carriages. The seats run down the center so you can sit down and have a view of the scenery either side or stand for a better...More

Bought the steam and cuisine luncheon for $103pp. The food was delicious, it was extremely relaxing and nice to wind through the trees on the clackity old narrow gauge train. If you want a peaceful relaxing ride I suggest the steam and cuisine luncheon or...More

This was part of a day trip and was very enjoyable, sitting on the rattling old carriages watching the lovely scenery go by, what's not to like? We had a diesel train instead of steam as it was a hire fire risk that day.

I booked the steam and cuisine package, and it was awesome and worth the extra $$ (plus, you're supporting a historical experience too). The food was really good (surprising!), hot and fresh, and great friendly car attendant (and I heard others around me saying the...More
