PUFFING BILLY OPERATES DAILY EXCEPT CHRISTMAS DAY.

Puffing Billy is Australia’s favorite steam train and one of the finest preserved steam railways in the world. This century-old steam train continues to run on its original mountain track from Belgrave to Gembrook in the magnificent Dandenong Ranges 40kms east of Melbourne.

Puffing Billy was built to serve at the turn of the century and is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. The Railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day, thanks to the tireless efforts of more than 900 dedicated volunteers.

I enjoy taking puffing billy in one direction and walking along the track back to the car... Great walk between Belgrave and Lakeside (Lakeside to Gembrook isn't as nice in my opinion), and we usually pack a picnic lunch for along the way. If you have an entertainment book, you can even get a discount for your train tix (or... More

We arrived on a Wed morning via day tour coach. Train expected to leave at 1030am. We had some time before departing and took pictures around the train/train station. Try to sit on the right side of the train to take in more scenery. Hanging your legs out of the open cabin is a great experience. Train was not fast... More

Did the Dinner and Dance trip and it was absolutely brilliant. Started with Cheese Olives and bread and dips with soup being served on the train trip to the Packing Shed. Once there had a beautiful 2 course meal with music and dancing. We then had port, tea/coffee and chockies on the trip back to Belgrave. A wonderful night and... More

For a little over $30 more than a normal ticket on PB, you can have a 3 course lunch plus coffee and chocolates on the train like we did on Thursday. We had a bottle of local wine for $20. You can't hang your legs out the sides of the carriage, but it's a really nice way to spend a... More

It really doesn't matter if you are a steam buff, railway enthusiast or just having a day out with the family. The Puffing Billy Railway is fantastic good fun. The train leaves from Belgrave and meanders up the mountain side stopping a various places on the way. The 10.30am was rammed mostly Japanese tourists but all in good fun spirits.... More

I first went here decades ago - and my second time around was filled with same sense of excitement and wonderment. Its a simple thing to go for a train ride but it really is a great experience. Make sure you sit wit legs out the window and relax, its really beautiful breath in the fresh air and take in... More

A good experience for both adults and children. Must sit on the rail to enjoy the ride. The journey is about 20 minutes, from Belgrave to Menzie Creek which is just nice. Keep your eyes on the curved bridge across the road where you can see the train whole trainn while negotiating the bend.

I was treated to a surprise trip on the Puffing Billy railway on a recent trip to see my son in Melbourne. I am a member of the Tallylyn Railway in Wales to which this steam railway has affiliation and wanted to pay a visit. As it was in the weeks before christmas we had a natter platter luncheon on... "Puffing Billy" wasn't puffing the day we rode it. We spent over three hours getting there and back, for a 20 minute ride that wasn't on a steam locomotive due to the fire risk. Instead, we had a diesel engine pulling a few cars of tourists taking incessant selfies - to the point where one woman was so self-absorbed that... More

My brother and I came to experience the Puffing Billy Train and Railway as part of our overall visit to Melbourne. The day we came, the return journey was from Belgrave to Lakeside. It is interesting to know that the railway started in 1900 to open up remote areas mainly to workers and closed in 1953 following a landslide which... More
