A bit tacky, not particularly impressive. To be fair I am not a big R McT fan, nevertheless still a bit tacky. The town of Helensburgh however was lovey. Nicely located, nice people.

Dear Tom C Thank you for taking the trouble to comment on your visit to The Hill House. I am very surprised you found the house "a bit tacky" as it is the real thing - genuine Mackintosh design. As you say yourself, though, you are not a Mackintosh fan. In fact, Mackintosh fans come from all over the world... More

Absolutely blown away by this house, the simplicity, subtleties, and pure beauty. This was the last stop of a study tour that had taken in Glasgow school of art, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and his wife Margaret Macdonald. It is magnificent, well looked after, and excellently curated. The sitting room was off white and the sun was streaming through the... More

Dear Andy W Thank you so much for your wonderful review of The Hill House. You were so lucky, visiting on a such a lovely day as the house is seen at its best when the sun is shining. We have many visits from groups who are doing study tours of CR Mackintosh buildings which is great because they can... More

I have visited this place on a number of occasions and each time find something new to marvel at. I love the clean lines favoured by Rennie Mackintosh and this house is full of them. Well worth a visit.

I visited using my NTS membership, I'd say that the full ticket price is quite expensive compared to other NTS properties I have visited so far. House is in the middle of a residential area but well signposted and easy to find with a car park to the rear of the property. Even from outside I enjoyed seeing the Charles... More

Dear Heather What a lovely review! Thank you so much for letting us know how much you enjoyed your visit to The Hill House. As far as the ticket prices are concerned, NTS divides its properties into Bands, and so our admission charges have to be the same as all other properties in our Band. It does make membership a... Fortunately for us we started our Scottish holiday on the last weekend in October which enabled us to visit Hill House the day before it closed for the Winter. Each room has individual features created by Rennie Mackintosh and his wife for the publisher John Mackie. Margaret Macdonald's textile work and eye for colour greatly enhanced the designs of her... We had to go to Scotland for a funeral unfortunately, and after much time spent on funeral arrangements we needed a nice relaxing day out. So glad my brother thought of the Hill House. Loved seeing the architecture and designs of Charles Rennie MacIntosh. Was a very pleasant visit if a bit over priced. Only disappointment was in the grounds... More

Dear Angela Thank you for your kind comments about The Hill House. I am so glad that your visit helped you and your brother relax after making funeral arrangements. So sorry you did not like the garden. At this time of year, the flowers in the beds are allowed to die back so that the gardener can then clear the... More

I've been to the Hill House twice before & have been very impressed. This time I was taking an American visitor to show her her first sighting of any of Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work. She was not impressed! The National Trust for Scotland has decided to install blinds in all of the rooms to conserve the furnishings, etc. This removes... More

Dear PM A . Thank you for your comments about your visit to The Hill House. I am very sorry that you found it such a disappointing experience. The conservation blinds were installed earlier this year in 3 (not all) of the rooms to protect the contents from over-exposure to light which will damage surfaces over time. The Mackintosh designed... More

Visited on 19 October 2016 and the garden was gorgeous in autumn splendour. Inside the house I was struck by the attention to detail of design by Rennie Mackintosh. So much of the design still looks 'modern'. Well worth the effort to get there.

Set up the hill from the town centre this is a very fine house looking out to the river Clyde. In a beautiful setting this white rendered house is set amid lovely gardens. Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed throughout, there are delights wherever you go. Unfortunately, even on the busy sunny day we visited, the cafe was not open. Helensburgh itself... More
