They made the “water of life” here!

Our Scotland Explorer pass include admission to this historic distillery, so we did our best to make sense of Google Maps and the car GPS and eventually found it. Note to Historic Scotland - better signage and make sure Google is steering potential visitors in the right direction! Once inside, it’s a self-tour with an audio guide. You learn about the art of distilling whisky, and the history of this particular distillery. It was a quiet day, most of the time we had the place to ourselves. At the end of the walk-about, you get a free dram of a local blend, always a good way to end a tour. It was fascinating to see the huge copper tanks and wooden barrels, walk through the various production rooms and buildings, and peek inside the warehouse. By the way, this distillery was built in 1899 and operated, with some slowdowns and stoppages, until 1983. What’s on view is just how it was left on the day it closed. Oh, we also learned the word whisky is derived from uisge beatha, Gaelic for “water of life”. Indeed!

Great place to visit. The tour is self guided and allows up close viewing. It was fun to see the system, and the recreations. The person from whom we bought tickets, etc. was extremely friendly. Highly recommend, if you are interested in distillery.

As a keen whiskey drinker I was keen to have a look at this place. We interesting walking around without a tour guide trying to rush you along. Looking forward to finding out more about the history of the company when it closed down.

Visited on Sun 1 Sept, the staff were friendly, welcoming and very helpful, loved the hand held guide tour where you follow the numbers and listen to the information, very interesting, it was great to see the old workings of a distillery and the guide information was really informative, the guide book is an extra buy but again is a interesting read and gives you some more information on the history of the distillery, we really enjoyed our visit

Up Close Insight into Victorian Whisky Distilling.
Aug 2019 • Family
Visited this Victorian Whisky Distillery and it was fantastic as younger children are welcome you can get an unique up close experience without all the safety issues of a working distillery. See how whisky was distilled and made in this historic site. You follow a trail and have a hand held audio stick which takes you on a tour around the set route giving you information on how the process was carried out. You conclude in an audio visual room giving you the history and misfortune of Dallas Dhu and accompanied by a little dram of Rrodrick Dhu Whisky. Lovely distillery and staff.

A great distillery - and I’ve been to a few.
I loved the handheld listening devices that led you through the distillery and it was great to get up close to the stills. Lovely whisky at the end 😁.

Saw the brown signs and stopped in while returning to our accommodation after another visit. A really informative tour of a Victorian distillery. You can get in among the equipment and the included audio guide had just the right level if information. A wee dram at the end was also a pleasant addition to the day.

Get up and close to the equipment

This is a defunct distillery. Made in to an interactive museum. You get to see the whole process and the equipment up close. Great way to see how things work. Very good set up.
Running distilleries are limited to access to the different areas.

Go here before visiting other distilleries
May 2019 • Couples
This little place is entirely worth the trip. Several days before coming here, we had been to the Bowmore distillery on Islay. As Bowmore is a working distillery there were obvious restrictions. Dallas Dhu as no such restrictions. Given the chance, I would visit here prior to visiting any other distillery as the fantastic audio tour allows you do go through at your own pace without crowds of people or a noisy industrial environment. Make sure to get your dram at the end! The gentlemen in the gift shop/bar/interpretative center were very nice and happy to answer any questions we had
