See the large and imposing suite of buildings from the 12th to the 17th century with the grand hall-house, thought to be the oldest standing stone castle in Scotland. There is also a delightful walled garden, with scented flowers and a beehive-shaped doocot, which overlooks the Forth. Take a guided tour in summer to see all around the castle including the painted ceiling in the east range, which is a precious survival from the early 17th century. Open all year. Winter Closed Thus and Fri.

Very interesting place with old walled garden and apple orchard. Great to see this place live again. Dundee cake very tasty and coffee carefully made. Good excuse to return.

Pro-tip: the adjacent church and the gardens are part of the town of Aberdour, and you can get in from the city-side. Locals use this for their daily walks. The paid part (we're HES members) is for the castle, which is neat but not might...More

Aberdour castle is known for its gardens and it is not hard to tell why. Even though the ruins are impressive as well and nice to walk through, it is the garden that impressed me most. The beehive-shaped dovecot is the cherry on top. When...More

I did this on a dank and misty morning, and really enjoyed it, so what it must be like when the sun is out and the birds are singing I can only imagine. Aberdour Castle has a great history waiting to be discovered and is...More

If we hadn't done a bit of Google research in advance, we would have been left wondering about the history of the castle. Although there are some information boards and location identifying signs, there is scope for far more background to be provided. There were...More

Part ruins, but this doesn't detract from what a beautiful building this would have been in it's day, and indeed still is now. A few information boards around but I'd suggest buying the guide book if you're interested in really finding out about the place....More

The Lego exhibition was excellent and we took the opportunity to visit the rest of the castle whilst we were there. Although partly ruined nowadays it has information plaques with historical facts around the remaining parts of the castle and grounds. There was a small...More

Made a stop here on our way up to Aberdeen, and the place was well worth the visit! Bigger than expected, and it was nice to be able to stroll around the castle and the gardens and explore the place on our own.

Aberdour puts all its eggs in one basket. There is not far to walk to beaches, harbour, past lovely houses. The castle is right by the train station. It is large and beautifully made, with enough ruins still standing and lovely grounds and doocot. The...More

This is a really interesting castle where you have freedom to roam around the building and the grounds. It`s well signed with explanatory boards, there`s a proper cafe and a good shop too. The grounds must be delightful on a dry warm day and it`s...More
