This coastal artillery fortress was built be Henry VIII. A lot of history is explained. A fantastic audio tour is included in the low price. Good views. Can dress up as soldiers and take photos.

Lovely castle, interesting history and how it was built. Lovely old board games the kids enjoyed playing. Would recommend a visit.

It's great that this place has audio guides, it kept the children interested the whole time and then were interested enough to read the boards around the castle too. There's a pleasant little picnic area in the garden which was also really well kept. I would recommend for a 2 or 3 hour trip.

Interesting and historic castle. Unusually, for this type of defensive castle, it has been well used for just about every year of its life. Over the years it has been inhabited by the gun crews, naval officers. army officers of the Royal Engineers and even used as a family home. Whilst visiting there are opportunities for donning naval and army... More

An interesting historical building. Built during the reign of Henry VIII and used as a small garrison for most of its remaining history. It did become a private residence for a few decades, but reverted to military use subsequently. Harbour views. Has a nice little tea room, serving Dorset apple cake :) We missed the ghost tour...

Arrived on a wet day without dampening our spirits. Timed it right for a ghost tour by a lady in full witches regalia. Very spooky, the group was shown from room to room with tales being told very spookily but interesting. All in the 'spirit' of forthcoming Halloween. The castle is worth a good look with fine views from the... More

Very good for young kids and very informative. It's great being able to run around an old castle looking in all the nooks and cranny's.

At first glance Portland Castle may appear small and rather defenseless, but don't let looks deceive you. It is a quick walk from the car park to the ticket office/gift shop where you receive an electronic necklace which guides you through the castle and grounds. This allows you to set your own pace and gives you the opportunity to spend... More

We visited Portland Castle at the weekend, after hearing good reviews, and was not disappointed. Very interesting (and complementary) audio guide, plenty to do and see, not expensive, and plenty of free parking. Very helpful and knowledgeable staff. This castle has had plenty of TLC and it shows, well done English Heritage. A super afternoon out. Worth the entrance fee... More
