The South Devon Railway is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions and is the longest established steam railway in the region. The former GWR branch line runs along the stunning valley of the Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes on a 14 mile round trip. The steam trains offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction for families and people of all ages. The railway also has a fascinating museum, gardens, riverside walk, locomotive restoration workshops, a gift and model railway shop, refreshment rooms and more. Free car parking at Buckfastleigh, just off the A38, midway between Exeter and Plymouth; Totnes is a 500 yard walk from the main line station.

I did think that £15 for a return ticket to Totnes was a little steep, for what equates to an hours total journey time. However, the ride itself was enjoyable. You can't help but find that you relax as the steam train chugs along. I...More

Excellent attraction, very scenic railway journey, interesting things to see and do at Buckfastleigh station, and a good tea room to boot. Buy the combined ticket for the Train, Butterfly house and Otter sanctuary for the best value.

Spectacular views across the River Dart as the train meanders along the river valley. Well organised and well run. Disappointed on this occasion that the steam engine was a former London Transport pannier tank, they really should try and use something that looks like GWR.

We travelled here with friends one of whom was a keen steam railway enthusiast. He was disappointed to find that the engine was identified as being stock from London Underground. Trip was very pleasant and the volunteers obviously love their railway. The main downside was...More

The South Devon railway from Buckfastleigh to Totnes is, as seems always with steam railways, a joy to behold. The dedication and commitment of the mass of volunteers who maintain and run these attractions should be, in my opinion, credited and awarded the highest of...More

A lovely old steam train that meanders it's way through the countryside from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. We sat in an old fashioned carriage which brought back many memories. Wonderful.

Not sure about play area but there is the butterfly and otter centre next to the Buckfastleigh Station or the rare breeds centre next to Totnes Station. Children and adults alike will be delighted by either of these.
