Just amazing... The world doesn't end here it starts. Scenery, eateries and time all merge into an experience not a trip. We eat at a fantastic "pink" tavern on the side of Clew bay.

Outstanding rugged beauty and unspoilt areas. Few tourists in evidence so we had unrushed and easy access on route. A fabulous area to relax unwind and recharge the batteries. The views are incredible and the ocean breeze is a Tonic

We will be spending several days in Keel and looking at renting a VW up (citicar), driving from Dublin, how are the roads on Achill for a small car?

Perfect as you have chosen the ideal car be aware that large amounts of coaches travel to keel and the road in parts is narrow give way

Do you know how long the drive takes along the Wild Atlantic way from Wesport to Achill Island?

The drive takes about an hour and a half. Realistically it will take longer because you are going to stop along the way to see different things and stop at the beaches. It is one of the most beautiful drives in Ireland. Take your time, its worth it.

My wife and I are planning on heading to Ireland for 6 days in late February 2018. We are going to hire a car from Dublin, leave early in the morning and head up to and drive The Atlantic Drive on Achill Island. We plan to stay up at Westport that night.
Couple of questions. Is that achievable in one day?. Where is a good place to stay up there.? Where is a good pub to go for a few beers and some live music late on a Sunday afternoon/ early evening?? We plan on heading down south after Westport to have alook at Ashford castle and then keep heading south. Is there anywhere else we should consider doing??? Much appreciated.

Make sure you drive to keem beach on achil. We nearly missed it but were recommended by a waitress. The drive to it is stunning. Remember that it will be dark about 6 so an early start is advisable. There are some nice cafes in newport just outside westport that specialise in irish produce that would be good for lunch.

How long does it take to drive around Achill Island?

Really depends on how many stops you make and the weather. We spent a full day there....I'd spend a day if you can. There is so much to see. We stopped at Minaun Hill (spectacular views and you can drive to the top!), the Beehive Cafe for super cakes and coffee, Keem bay (gorgeous beach), Corrymore Lake (beautiful corrie), the deserted village, the drive around Coraun, lunch in Alice's Bar and a drink in McLoughlins Bar, Mulranney ( super views from the lounge. We left Westport at 11 and returned at 9 that night. Hope you enjoy your visit.

Hi Sorry it's taken so long to answer
We have always stayed in Westport at the Westport Coast Hotel as it's a great base to stay .
Depending on your budget there are a lot of B&B's to choose from.
You could try Newport or Castlebar they may be less expensive you can find plenty self catering cottages in the area.
Hope this helps

We are a party of three and traveling by rail and bus. Do you need a car for this adventure? or Will you pick up and drop off at my hotel in Westport?

Hello Rochelle,
You can take the train from Dublin to Galway and bus services to Westport. I do however, recommend that you rent a car in Galway so you can drive up to Westport. There is a lot of things to see and being limited to buses will cut off a lot of the things you want to see in that area of the country.
I hope you have a great trip.

Has anyone cycled this? We'll be bringing our racing bikes, hoping to drive to achill, then cycle this route. Is it very hilly and difficult?

Hi, I travelled by coach and can imagine from Keel to Keem would be very difficult as the road is narrow and steep. As others have stated the views are spectacular.

Is it worth staying overnight on Achill? Any decent hotel or B&B?

We have visited Achill Island on two occasions & both times have stayed at Anvil House B&B, Convent Road. This is without a doubt the best B&B we have ever stayed at. The accommodation is first class, amazing value, within walking distance of pubs & restaurants & the breakfasts keep you going all day!
