i enjoyed a visit to St. Edan's Cathedral Church and graveyard. It is set on beautiful grounds and the graveyard has two very notable graves, one of Father John Murphy of Boolavogue, one of the local leaders of the 1798 United Irishmen's Rebellion. He was executed in Tullow in County Carlow but it is reputed that some of his remains are buried here in Ferns.
The second is that of Diarmuid McMurrough, the deposed High KIng of Leinster who died in 1171. There is a beautiful ruin of a Chapter House and St. Mary's Abbey ruins lie across the fields to the rear towards the road.
The original St Edan’s itself dates from the 13th century and the current structure incorporates much of the earlier, much larger, medieval Cathedral. Inside is the remarkable 800 year old effigy tomb of Bishop John St John. It was burned down in 1575 and was rebuilt in 1577.
The grounds are really lovely though, it makes fro such a peaceful stroll.
