An enchanting spot not to be missed

When you pass through and see the beautiful village of Lismore and its surroundings, I strongly suggest that you take a little swerve up to Cappoquin. At first glance, you might decide to drive straight through heading towards the beautiful seaside town of Dungarvan or stop by Mount Mallory. But I encourage you to rest a while and visit Cappoquin House, a magnificent 18th century Georgian home in the ownership of the Keane family. Rather than going into details about the house, its history and the family who continue to reside there, I will leave that to the charming Sir Charles Keane, who will enthrall you with facts, details and everything there is know about this enchanting place. He will also explain the ties between his family and Mount Mallory, which is only a 10min drive from Cappoquin. The beautiful gardens are not to be missed and although they are a sight to be enjoyed all year round, they are in full bloom during the late spring and high summer season. I am not exaggerating when I say that there is something magical about this house and its gardens; and you will no doubt feel a sense of peace and tranquility about it. Although not a requirement, I would recommend that you call in advance, if possible, as it would be a shame to miss the pleasure of meeting Sir Charles personally. Cappoquin also boasts a private and exclusive guesthouse and restaurant. Either prior or after your visit, you might wish to make a brief stop at Barrons Bakery for a sweet or savoury treat. But without a doubt, Cappoquin House was definitely the icing on the cake on this trip. Five stars.

A remarkable haven of peace, colour and great garden design. Mature gardens with some wonderful trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants. Very easy to follow guide with map. Delightful views down the Blackwater Valley. A most pleasant 90 minutes. The house is open to 13.00 from mid-July to end August, but we arrived a little too late to tour inside. My one qualification is that I am not sure how child-friendly the place is

For those interested in gardens this one is a must. Located on outskirts of Cappoquin the gardens are privately owned and the very reasonable sum of 5 euro to explore is well worth it. I was there during the heat wave in early July 2018 and couldn't believe how the gardeners managed to keep the planting so fresh. A trail copy is provided so you can follow mown paths and linger at various points with magnificent views over the surrounding countryside. With a mainly acid soil I will have to return to see the collection of azaleas and rhododendrons at a date in May. Well worth a visit as you can also go to the nearby Tourin house and gardens.

For all 8 of us, the entire 35 minute experience was underwhelming and an utter waste of time ! The English 'Gent' who suddenly appeared ( the titled owner ? ) was pleasant enough - appeared to be in something akin to a 'bubble' that was beautifully detached - and did a great job of convincing us that the gardens were on the cusp of bursting in to life. We arrived looking for lunch ( or at least a cup of tea and a bun !! ) but despite our hints ( the house appeared to have facilities for such a service !? ) the €5 per person voluntary 'contribution' was swiftly collected and we were pointed straight towards the start of the 'walk'. Pleasant, quick and forgettable ? Probably a little harsh, but this was like walking through a green-fingered Enthusiast's admittedly large back garden. Hypothesis ! An in-tune 'Local' would have demonstrated emotional intelligence and an understanding of great customer service by putting on the kettle, engaging in some conversation, guiding us round the grounds etc... We'd have willingly tripled our 'contribution' for such a 'welcome' !

Wonderful garden with some very ancient and unusual plantings.

The guide brochure provides an excellent description of the different sections of the overall grounds and the signs will guide you.

Must see for garden lovers.

This was our third visit to Cappoquin Gardens, the other two visits having been made in May in previous years when Rhododendrons, Camellias and Magnolias were in bloom. While the garden was more spectacular when so many shrubs were in flower, we really enjoyed our visit in September and found such great diversity of shrubs and trees. It is a memorable garden.

Beautiful gardens, especially this time of year when the myriad hydrangeas were in full bloom, as well as a wonderful eucryphia smothered in blossoms. We were able to take a tour of the house, which has been in this family for 300 years, and is just chock full of history.

We visited the gardens on a particularly rainy day in June and therefore had the luxury of wandering the gardens and grounds all on our own. We ran into the owner who introduced us to some of the special features, including the fine collection of geraniums. Every corner of the garden is extremely well kept. Situated on a hillside offering sweeping views of the valley below, the garden is at once stately and homely - one of the finest gardens in Ireland.
The house itself, although not open to the public, is a fine example of late Georgian architecture.
