Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had a hearty meal in Mccarthy pub. In the
family for generations. This restaurant, pub and undertakers is loaded with atmosphere. A must if
in Fethard!!

What can we say about McCarthys other than fantastic. The whole team are friendly, welcoming, chatty and helpful. The food is outstanding, the bar is well stocked with all you could wish for.
It was lovely to visit a pub that has not changed and is still full of character and history and has also been run by the same family for generations.
Looking forward to our next visit.
Many thanks

when the sign outside the bar says something like - ''publican , appocacthry and undertaker '' you know your in for something different ! mc carthys has been one of our 'locals for the past 20 yrs , as you walk in you are transported back in time , to your left is the old 'chemists' shop -complete with original counter top , cabinets and shelving - to your right is the old 'snug' a ''sectioned off '' part of the bar near the front window with views onto fethard main street , it still has its original glass panels ! in front of you is the main bar -a long solid piece of irish oak - with proper brass foot rail and hand rail , the bar back is as original as the rest of the pub - old wooden 'kitchen' work tables with bench seating , and in the centre of the room a huge pot bellied stove with its flue pipe running across the width of the bar before exiting into the roof space . at the far end of the main bar is the old 'office' -it was originally the living room of the 3 ladies that used to run the bar back in the early 1900's but is now used as a private dinning room , to your right is 'the old school room ' complete with old style school desks (with ink wells) -this is mainly used as dining room during meal service and can be very busy -especially of a sunday lunch time and early evening . to your left is the restaurant - now recently refurbished and with a new chef and kitchen - this is going to be used a lot more for meals to free up room in the bar area. , at the rear of the pub there is a large garden area with tables and chairs set out for a beer garden - it is set off with part of old town walls as a backdrop , mccarthys has a long history serving the people of fethard and a lot of 'celebrity' guests have visited the place , andrew lloyd webber wrote a part of his musical 'starlight express' there with ben elton , john magnier the owner of the famous coolemoorstud , alex ferguson , marilyn manson and ditta von tease , the dubliners , phil coulter and paul brady have all played or been in the bar ... despite its well known connections and its obvious attractions for tourists - anyone who visits mccarthy's receives a warm welcome , one visit and you feel like a regular !!

The best Irish pub in the world!

Full of history, the photographs of famous visitors are worth the journey (the beer and food are good too!)

We were on a road trip from Clare back to Waterford and had heard of McCarthys so decided to make it on route we also have a ancestry link to Fethard so two birds with the one stone ,

The kitchen has just closed but but we were accommodated menu was simple but fare was good as were drinks .....

McCarthys hasn’t changed much over the years and still has the shop on the left as you come in the door the pub oozes charisma and charm of days gone by and takes you aback to how things were ...

The Barman and owner Jasper is helpful informative and easygoing we had the kids with us and felt totally at ease the only Shame is there is no local hotel I’d like to experience a night out in McCarthy’s !!!!! I don’t think you’d be disappointed great to find a pub like this close to home !

I absolutely loved this place. We ate here, two adults and two kids. The food, atmosphere and staff were excellent. The pub has lots to offer and if a quiet pint is required they even have a snug!! :-)
It is well worth detouring to Fethard to see this gem of a pub.
Thank you

Service is great, there is seating both in the bar itself as well as a back room. Bar menu with good choices and great beer! What else could you want?

Treating and meeting an old friend for lunch in Fethard turned out to be a meal disappointment. I’ve long heard that McCarthys was the venue of choice for food. A very limited menu didn’t bother us. The chicken Kiev’s however with mash potatoes and wet vegetables did really not meet the standard fare available in these parts. Perhaps it was a bad day in the kitchen.
