About
As one of the last mills in Ireland to use Irish fleece we continue to preserve the traditional skills of dyeing, spinning and weaving allowing us to produce high quality, authentic Irish textiles. The history of our mill dates to 1204, with our family lineage in crafing woollen textiles dating to 1778. Our mill shop is open daily where one can browse our yarns and textiles in our showroom which also offers views into our historic mill. As well as offering our own Irish wool, lambswool and mohair blankets, throws and scarves we also offer a selection of quality gifts from other Irish makers.

What an excellent find! Trevor gave us an impromptu explanation of how the sheep are selected and graded, how the wool is harvested, carded, washed, spun, and woven through the mill and finally turned into beautiful high quality blankets, shawls, scarves, etc.

We were very impressed by this operation -- one of only two totally horizontal woolen mills (from wool to finished product) left in Ireland. They have very high quality and work with the sheep farmers to purchase directly from specific herds for their wool.

Once part of the Duiske Abbey grounds, built and operated by the Cistercian monks, now this mill is in the hands of the same family for many generations. They maintain their high quality by hands-on processes, no computerization.

My husband, daughter and I did a tour of Cushendale Woollen Mills, which was amazing. It is fantastic to see traditional skills preserved. The passion that goes into the production of their products is unbelievable. You can purchase both traditional and contemporary style products from their onsite shop or online. They showcase quality Irish design / craft at its best. I would definitely recommend the tour as it was so interesting and to visit their website to see their fabulous range of products.

I learned all manner of things during this informative show and tell. I would have liked to have seen more of the mill, but there really is not room in most of the building. However, he does demonstrate one rare and old machine that is still the best for winding bobbins. He talked about wool, the dyes, the water, the whole process of weaving, and what it turns out like if you do different things. This was a highlight of my trip. Prices at their store are the same or cheaper than everywhere else too, btw.

Fantastic tour of the mills with an excellent narrative from Miriam Cushen as to history and prospects for this, very traditional family business - well worth the visit and the town if Graignemanagh is quaint, traditional and worth a few hours and a lunch.

What an amazing experience to see this working woollen mill. We were guided by owner Philip Cushen who has a wealth of knowledge. It is incredible the craftsmanship and level of detail in the products from beginning to end. I particularly love the baby blankets as gifts.

We visited Cushendale Woollen Mills recently, and were amazed with the history of the mill down the generations of the Cushen family. Wonderful to hear about wool being treated & dyed and then see the machines that turn it into yarn, and have been working there for years & years. The yarn is then used to create a wonderful array of throws, scarves etc. in the mills and there's also a little shop to browse through. It's a rare opportunity to see history in action - the same process being used for generations - even the young children on the tour were enthralled.

Really enjoyed this tour and talk at Cushendale Woollen Mills. Friendly staff, very interesting talk about this history of the company, its location and the work they do. Seeing the machines in motion and hearing from a skilled craftsperson such as Philip Cushendale explaining how they create such beautiful products was a real highlight. It brings home how important these craft businesses are. Worth booking a visit if you're in the area.

We were so lucky to take the tour of Cushendale during Heritage Week, and what a wonderful experience it was! A family-owned business since the 1800s, the passion and dedication of Philip and his family is evident from the tour and the fantastic quality of their products. Follow the entire process from sheep wool through to the finished product on this fascinating tour. The rich heritage and an opportunity to see a working woollen mill in operation makes this a unique and unmissable tour. Go out of your way for this!

Wonderful tour of the Mill during Heritage Week. Not only did we hear about the family and mill's history but we got to see some of the equipment working. Absolutely fascinating. We also saw some of the finished rugs, throws, scarfs and other products made. The wonderful soft water in Graiguenamanagh makes it possible to produce the most beautiful colours! I'd highly recommend a trip down here.
