    Romantic hide-away
We found the overnight experience to be very enjoyable. The food and service (with a particular shout out to Mary) was exceptional (we had dinner and brunch there) and James was a wonderful host throughout our stay. Our lodgings were rustic, spacious and comfortable with a mezzanine floor wood fire (that we enjoyed for some quiet down-time) adding to the charm. The bathroom is in need of a little 'love' and we would have liked a quieter water pump and there is a short walk from the lodgings to the restaurant, so bring suitable footwear. Overall, we would whole-heartedly recommend Burtown House to our friends and family.

Poor value for sandwiches & coffee
3 of us rocked up on Bank Holiday Monday to be told that they were fully booked, this sounded encouraging, as they must have been doing a good job. We were about to move on when my wife was told that we could have a snack (toasted sandwich, coffee, cake) in the covered outdoor area. We decided on toasted ham sandwiches, as only option & coffee and that was what we got along with a few crisps for accompaniment, not a lettuce leaf, slice of cucumber, nothing, not even the tails of a pea vine. At €55 I feel that was very expensive

Particularly slow service. Arrived for 1pm advised in advance NOT TO BE LATE! We were served by a friendly waiter, who gave us menus. After about 10 mins he came back and asked if we were ready to order which we were. We also requested that we order drinks at the same time. The waiter took our drinks order and went off to get them. After which our food order was taken. A wait of 20 mins followed for our starters which were fine. We then had 23 min wait for our main course.. Which I thought was excessive. We found it difficult to get 'any' waiting staffs attention to order a second drink as they appeared to be wholly understaffed. Our mains arrived, adequate, barely, really should have ordered extra veg etc. But reckoned at that point it would take another 20 mins. Eventually got a servers attention and ordered 2nd drink which took about 15 mins. Two fish and two beef specials for the day given by one waiter as Hake and the owner told us Cod?? Tried for some time to get attention to order more drinks. When the drinks arrived one order was incorrect so the waitress just gave a different one with no reference to the fact that they had run out of the one we ordered?? When we asked she told us they had run out. So decided to substitute for something else herself?? Shortly after getting our drinks the owner started clearing the table and asked us if we could hurry up as there was another group due at our table?? There were other inaccuracies re menu (owner saying one thing, differing from waiter who was correct!) etc but too long to address here. Pretty abysmal to say the least😕

The restaurant at Burton house is fab, we have a lovely brunch and I will be back in future to sample their lunch and dinner menus. The garden however is quite small, does have nice flowers etc, however at 8 euro, is simply overpriced and not worth paying for. It is a shame however one is not missing anything by not visiting the gardens here. As other reviews have mentioned, the likes of Emo Court have much more to offer in this regard, and are free of charge.

We were a mixed family group of 21 people with 6 kids in primary school.
We had a great space to ourselves, so the kids could move around after they were fed. The kids food came first, which was really good practice for happy kids and happier parents.
The service was good, very helpful and not rushed.
The food was good, the portions not massive, but probably just enough.
However, the linguini didn't come as the menu advised.
The roasted vegetable side dish was fried onion, fried mushroom and fried potato. I mentioned this to the server at the time, but didn't get an explanation nor an apology.
The desserts were very small and not value for money.
Overall the food was good, but expensive and not per menu.

Hi, rented the 3 bed house with friends last weekend and had dinner and brunch in the restaurant. The house is gorgeous (probably could put the heating on before people arrive) beautifully decorated. The food in the restaurant was really delicious and the staff were lovely, especially Paul.
Thanks Cathyann

I can't believe they have the nerve to charge EUR 8 to walk around a small dreary field. I decided to visit after seeing it featured on RTEs Nationwide programme a while ago, but I was so disappointed. I'm sure some of the gardens are nice but unfortunately they are all closed off to the paying visitors. There are signs everywhere saying private, no entry so what you are allowed walk around is a small field with a few daffodils in one corner. There's also what they call a " sculpture park," which is very neglected looking, a few of the signs for the sculptures had fallen off and were just left lying on the ground. I didn't bother eating in the restaurant as when I enquired about what time they opened until I got a very cold, curt reply ",if you're thinking of eating you'd want to book now, we're nearly full up" the place was empty. Overall I found the whole experience so disappointing, it's one of those places that seems to think they're doing you a big favour even letting you through the door. A complete rip off.

Dec 2020
Myself and my husband had lunch last Wed. 9 Dec. This was something that we had been really looking forward to and we are anxious to support local business whenever we can and more especially in these tough times. To the say the least, we are very disappointed with our whole experience.

When we arrived, our greeter was not wearing a mask and we noticed two other male staff members without masks in the restaurant also around that time.

We ordered our food and it took half an hour for our starters to arrive, both of which were luke warm when they arrived, but very tasty. This was surprising as the restaurant did not appear that busy and our waitress apologised for the delay without any prompting.

We understand that the restaurant is a barn, however, we were freezing throughout our meal and this definitely did not add to our enjoyment. Can I suggest that they look at this issue for their own benefit, maybe a stove during winter.

While we were sitting at our table, a male waiter passed by our table on the narrow side three times, very close to my husband and not obeying the 2m social distancing rule. Eventually my husband moved his chair to try and discourage this practice or “short cut” route.

Main courses arrived without any further delay. I ordered nut roast and what I was served was extremely disappointing, it was not nut roast but stuffing, nothing like described on the menu and covered in gravy. We still believe that there must have been a mistake and we were served stuffing in error, this was not nut roast and at €19? We brought it to the attention of the waitress and she brought it back to the kitchen. She returned and asked if I wanted to order something else and we decided to go with one main course and have desserts and coffee instead. We waited to order the dessert for nearly 20 minutes and gave up because at this stage we were freezing! We left approx. 1.5 hours after our reservation, cold and very disappointed.

We raised our concerns to the waitress and she informed us that she had spoken to the chef and also the manager. I feel it is incredible that neither the chef or the manager felt it necessary to come and speak with us!

This is not something that I ever do but the experience was so poor I feel obligated to post this review. I have emailed the Green Barn about our experience but so far, have not received a response.

The dusty, dirty mouse laden apartment also had a lack of crockery, it was a challenge, 1 large plate and 2 bowls, some containers for preparing food in the microwave would have been useful e.g jug or pyrex dish. We were surprised to see the lack of hand sanitiser in both the apartment and the Green Barn.
Sadly due to this experience we would not be returning in the future and not recommending to friends or family.

We have stayed in a wide range of self-catering accommodation of varying costs, this accommodation was not worthy of the price given of our experience.

We are sorry that you disliked our accommodation so much : we live onsite and check in with all our guests as I did with your husband : who informed me everything was perfect. To then get this review is unfair to say the least: As is the case with Tripadvisor it is sadly negative people who use it who don’t have the ability to talk to your face. Here are some reviews from other recent guests : you can read many more reviews on Airbnb and see what other guests stay. We have been ‘super hosts’ for 12 years on this platform . “This is one of the most carefully curated studio apartments you'll find in Ireland. Exceptional design choices, and set right in the middle of gardens, which you have access to after they're closed to the public. A real gem.” "I recommend this place so much it was outstanding! To the top super location and lovely people and James was really kind! Such a peaceful place" 'Booked a week out, effortless communication. We happened to come when the gardens were in full bloom, so this 18th century estate was extra surreal. Never sold, it’s the collaboration of several generations of creatives who, although work in different mediums, maintain timeless and impeccable taste. The on-site organic garden restaurant, The Green Barn, thanks to the chef just imported from Noma, produced by far the best meals we had during our too short stay in Ireland. This place is a treasure, everything you could want from an Irish country experience and more. Next time will book it for a month.' ‘This was the highlight of my Ireland Trip. The stables have been renovated with class and style but with a respect for their heritage.’ 'The stay at The Stable Yard was a unique and enjoyable experience. The Green Barn restaurant was excellent and the hospitality of James and his family was superb. Thoroughly recommend..' 'Words and pictures do little justice to our incredible stay at Burtown House & Gardens. The space is full of such warmth, and really imbued with the pride and care with which it was brilliantly, thoughtfully renovated, when the hosts themselves called it home! It is perfect, and James is an excellent and attentive host, and has an incredible family history, details of which he shared when he gave us an initial tour. The Burtown House & Gardens just got more and more fascinating! The Green Barn is also worth every cent - brunch is incredible, and the staff treated us so very well! Be sure to spend time also walking the yards and gardens, greet the donkeys, and end each day cooking on the aga (a new experience for us!) and settling down with laughter and wine by the fire. You won't regret it. We only regret having to leave!’` 'This is a very special property set in a beautiful setting. The house is warm and inviting. It offers a perfect opportunity to relax.’ 'I was so happy when we arrived at James’ studio. The space was beautiful and cozy in such a dreamy setting. I’d love to come back again to spend more time walking the grounds. Their restaurant was fantastic with all the food grown from their own garden!'

We recently got married, choosing Burtown House & Gardens as the venue for our celebrations. It was one of the first and best decisions we made. We had wanted a venue that would be intimate, provide us with a personalised experience and a relaxed ambience. Somewhere that would make our day special for us and more importantly for our guests. We also wanted a venue that would be memorable. James and all the staff were with us on our journey right from the start, showing flexibility, patience and delivering on our many requests. They couldn’t have been more helpful and reassuring about all the important decisions to be made. The grounds are large and stunning, with blooming gardens and varied cozy niches, a diverse setting (great for wedding photographers) and relaxing for guests. The lovely surroundings contributed in no small part to the relaxed vibe we wanted for our reception. The food was spectacular and the Green Barn, where we ate, was everything we were looking for. We can’t recommend it highly enough, especially for anyone considering something a little different. Meet James, eat there and you won’t look past Burtown House & Gardens. It is an incredibly special and unique venue and we can’t imagine we would have had the same wonderful and memorable experience anywhere else. Thank you James and thank you to every one of the staff, who went over and beyond for us.

First trip to Burtown house today after wanting to go for months but due to restrictions could not travel. Very disappointed with the experience. Advertised as a walk with gardens etc. Seriously overpriced cost €16 for 1 adult and 2 kids to walk the garden... The whole walk took all of about 20 mins and granted one or two unique monuments it was a complete rip off. You can go to Emo Court or many other local walks free of charge and get acres of land to wander. I really had planned on having coffees and cakes for kids but we were all so disappointed with value for money of walk that we left and bought our coffees elsewhere. If they were not so greedy with entry to gardens we would have spent more on food / lunch etc

Had lunch with friends and we were awfully disappointed. Service was very slow and food was a big let down and overpriced. The table top was extremely rough and ended up snagging threads on a new jumper but the lady who served us was extremely friendly. Won't be recommending The Green Barn.

I appreciate that most of the food is locally sourced and grown locally ( I grow my own too) but we had a very overpriced sourdough baguette today which cost 11 euros each. ( considering it was takeaway) . Tasty as it was but it was overpriced, with more salad than meat . I really like this place but every time I visit , I feel like I’m being ripped off. I have gotten similar for approx 8 euros in another local establishment. It is worth a visit but as a once off...
