If you're interested in the American Civil War and you're visiting the Chickamauga (GA) battlefield, a visit to Orchard Knob along with Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain will give you the necessary perspective for the Battle of Chattanooga that followed.

Lots of historical markers and explanation and a great view of the surrounding skyline; its a great quick stop to take in some history while in Chattanooga. The neighborhood is a bit depressed so lock your car when you hike up the hill.

Orchard Knob is a great stop for someone wishing to visit all of the important areas of the battles for control of Chattanooga. From this site, you can get the same vantage point as the Union commanders before and during the assault on Missionary Ridge....More

You MUST check out Orchard Knob! The monuments are quite impressive and the views from the top are amazing! You can see downtown, Lookout/Signal Mtn, and Missonary Ridge!

Despite having lived in Chattanooga around 30 years this was my first trip to the Orchard Knob portion of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park. There is no dedicated parking for the park but there is plenty of space on the streets surrounding it....More

This location was several miles from Missionary Ridge and served as a signal station and Union headquarters. It played an important part in the battle of Missionary Ridge.

It was obvious why this area was chosen as a headquarters. You can see much of the surrounding terrain easily.
