Not your typical museum structure, this one is built into the side of hill, and much of it is underground. A contemporary version of a traditional Native American dwelling, this beautiful building features Native American (mostly the Sioux tribes) and pioneer exhibits, with many rare artifacts tracing the history of South Dakota.

Had some free time will on business in Pierre and being off season Sunday not much was available. So we came here...and it was great! It is not a huge place as far as the museum section goes but it is packed with a wealth of real artifacts and history. Start with a brief history of prehistorical stuff and move... More

I was inspired by the buffalo, teepee, and stagecoach. Some of the facts and stories they have set up are really neat.

My husband and I arrived in Pierre too early to eat at the steak house we had previously chosen. We were looking for a local visitor information center and found the Cultural Heritage Center instead. Although we did not have time to enjoy the museum, the gentleman at the front desk was extremely helpful in helping us decide on an... More

This was a 3+ hour visit for us which is more than we would normally devote. Really well done. The historians were serving cookies as it was free day for every one as they were linked to the Smithsonian which I guess also hosted an open house in DC. Local artist were displaying as well as a Lakota gentleman who... More

This is a wonderful museum with a great display of Native American life and artistry. A tipi to visit and then stop in a settler's sod house, see an original stage coach move on to gold panning and mining. A few interactive activities for kids. I think the displays will keep them engaged even though many are behind glass.

The center impressed at first sight, as it's literally buried in a hillside. But the exhibits indoors were even better. The center has a good collection of Indian and other artifacts from South Dakota's history, which are arranged chronologically. I was very impressed with how well they were displayed and explained, whether through signs or short videos. The center also... More
