The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in...

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm.

Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.

What an interesting place. First, we watched an informative movie. Then, our guide showed us around the museum. Lots to see!! Then, we went out to the dig site which is covered by a dome building. The kids also enjoyed digging for fossils and were rewarded with an arrowhead to keep!! We all enjoyed this site very much. Also, they... More

We are so happy that you and your children had a good time! Education is so important to us and we welcome the opportunity to give all teachers and home-schoolers our teacher's packet. Bring your children back in the summer during our annual dig (mid-June to mid-July) and you can see what our archaeologists do and find! thank you so... More

My college classmate and housemate is from Mitchell, SD and his mother and father were major contributors to this museum and archeological site. When we entered we met the director, who knew my classmate well and we solidified the notion of six degrees of separation. After a nice discussion with her, we quickly walked out to the dig site. It... More

Great time. The site was covered and very interesting. There was a docent in the building that talked to us about what was being uncovered.

Amazing, mostly unknown history awaits the traveller who visits this place. Not only is there an impressive museum with life-sized replicas of daily life 900 years ago, there's an active archaeology site, where you can watch technicians work on this incredibly rich site. Take a break from the tourist traps, and visit a place that will leave you filled with... More

Enjoyable just a little long for kids. The storytellers told about the Dakota Indian, included the audience in a dance and singing.

This is an open archeological dig where you can learn about the life of Native Americans in the area. Not just an interesting museum-type spot to learn, but a beautiful site. Small enough to visit along with other things during the day, but worth the stop. Park and walk down the path to the visitor center and then out to... More

We visited this place in 2011 and brought our daughter on this trip. We had a guide take us through and tell us about the local Indian tribe that lived in the area many years ago. There is an active dig that is under roof on the grounds and you can visit when you leave the museum. It is connected... More

Familiar with a number of Indian sites in America, I find this one unique in its ongoing "dig" of the site's prehistoric village dating back to 1000 yrs ago. Relevant exhibits of dwelling structures are exceptional. If you have more than casual interest in Indian history, don't miss visiting this small but superb site. If you have LESS than a... More
