Overview
More
An 1880 Train ride is a two-hour, narrated 20-mile round trip between Hill City snd Keystone South Dakota in the beautiful Black Hills. Passengers view vistas of Harney Peak, mining encampments and participate in good old-fashioned fun. Trains follow the original route of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid down in the late 1880s to service the mines and mills between Hill City and Keystone. The Black Hills Central Railroad is the oldest continuously operating tour railroad in the nation and operates three steam and two diesel engines throughout the season. One of our steam engines is close to 100 years old!

This was a relaxing half day. We caught the 11:15am train out of Keystone. It was perfect because it gave us just under an hour to walk Hill City and grab something to eat quick. The trip back to Keystone seemed shorter, as I believe...More

We fully enjoyed the trip with the steam engine. The earliest trip from Hill City to Keystone and back is by diesel while they build up the steam in engine 110. A slow enjoyable adventure that allows you to view wildlife and learn about the...More

You are obligated to relax because it is slow motion. Local people wave to the historic train. This track was built to service in excess of sixty mining claims.

This was one of the tourist experiences that was on our list. I would suggest going either first thing in the morning/late day or on a cloudy day in the summer. We arrived early so that my mother-in-law could sit on the one bench for...More

We bought the round trip ticket. It was fantastic! We had a section all to ourselves. It is a great way to see the area that not everyone gets to see! Snacks and drinks are for sale during the trip. There is also a souvenir...More

We recommend booking early to ensure there are seats on the ride you prefer. All rides typically sell out. We open for the 2017 season May 14.
