This is a late 19th century gun battery that was used to defend the coast around the Spanish American War. The fort is cast concrete, and you can see where the gun turrets were mounted, go inside the powder magazines, walk down to the edge...More

This gem is hidden away at the end of a long road. No entrance fee, no fee to park, no staff, just a small gate to climb through with a few sign posted warnings. Really interesting from a historical perspective. Plenty of the original buildings...More

We found Fort Fremont to be very historically interesting. We enjoyed touring, reading the signs and taking photos. There's even access to a beach. It's near Beaufort, SC and the Marine Corps Air Station, too.

Exceptional experience visiting an 1890s fort that was built To protect Port Royal from Spanish invasion. Directly across from Hilton Head Island the guns at Ft Fremont had the capability of shooting across HHI to protect the port.

The drive there is pretty cool. The fort is old and spooky. Neat piece of history. Very secluded location.

No cost. This site is not active with guides. It's open with few signs. Suggest doing history on net before seeing it for better understanding the Fort.
