Greenville is a wonderful town, they have done an amazing job revitalizing downtown and we enjoy visiting as often as possible. On this trip we discovered the art museum. Wow! Who would have thought this little city had a museum of this caliber. They are building a permanent collection of Andrew Wyeth including his father, son, and two sisters. It's... More

Just saw an awesome Andrew Wyeth Legacy exhibit and viewed the amazing wooden bird sculptures of Geofrey (sp?) McKoy. Nice open space. Building is part of a wonderful complex with children's museum, small theatre, natural science museum, etc. Worth a visit. And its free. Parking sometimes has a fee.

Thanks so much for your comment! I'm so glad you enjoyed the Wyeth Dynasty exhibition along with the sculpture by Grainger McKoy. Both exhibitions will be on view through the summer along with the exhibitions "Masterworks of Color: African-American Art from the Greenville Collection," "In a Mirror, Darkly," and "Carew Rice." I hope you are able to visit again soon! More

I visit this museum annually, as I love the permanent collection and the stellar Wyeth treasury here. This museum could do such a better job in educating/informing visitors about the works. Curatorial efforts here appear mediocre. The signage corresponding to the art is minimal, explaining little about the artists, period and details (unless this has been updated in the last... More

Hi Mark, Thanks so much for taking time to leave a review. I hope you were able to visit the exhibitions Wyeth Dynasty, Grainger McKoy, Poetry of Place, and Syd Solomon. All of these new exhibitions include informative text panels throughout. As you can imagine, there are several schools of thought on whether to include a lot of text within... More

This museum has so much to offer you on any given day. Much of the art is famous and you will probably know the artists if you like art.

When we walked in we were greeted by a guard that informed me my purse needed to be left by the door. It was a normal purse not a gigantic bag. They already have a 3 foot rule. How am I going to get close enough to hit something with my purse. And then they said it would not be... More

Management response:

I'm so sorry that you had a disappointing experience at the GCMA. That, of course, is never our intention. The "three-foot" rule and the large bag policies are new for us, and we are working to make sure it is enforced consistently but kindly, so your feedback is helpful. You should have been offered the option of a lightweight cart... More

This art museum is on the smaller side but the art displayed is definitely something to see. When we visited they were showing Grainger McKoy which was very interesting, he does birds in bronze and silver and wood, they are magnificent to look at. They also have a lot of Jasper Johns and Andrew Wyeth. The exhibits change often and... More

A very nice and well done museum; some excellent art; this place is a block away from the Bob Jones museum (see that review) that is downtown, about 3 blocks off Main St; definitely worth a stop; there was a special exhibit by an awesome woodcarver, Grainger McCoy; that had some massive carvings and was at the exhibit being interviewed...
