I visited with my husband and parents, and we all enjoyed the visit. My expectations about the focus of the tour were met. It was a great combination of the McLeod family history and various stories that focused on the lives of those enslaved there. I believe the tour was 30-40 minutes. My only critique is that I wish there were more information in the home/visitor center. I wanted more but it was just snippets/anecdotes here and there. If you visit this site, you need to take a tour to get the full experience.…

We thought the Plantation was lovely. You can go into the house and someone gives you the history. They also give you a cell phone to use to hear a history of each place you stop along the way. You can also go on a tour with a historian at no additional charge.

Our guide, John, gave a really interesting and informative presentation of the history of those who built and lived in/on the plantation, including the history of the slaves, where they came from, how they lived and ran the plantation, plus how they survived after the Civil War. Highly recommend!…

Jeff was an INCREDIBLE tourguide! We felt like we were getting a tour from someone with a Ph.D. in history. It was an eye-opening experience, provided us with a different view of what slaves went through by conducting the tour from the perspective of a child, using the stories shared by her ancestors who still live on James Island. It hit home. It also kept the attention of our 15 and 17 year-old children. I would highly recommend taking the actual tour w/the guide--we got there and the next tour time was booked--we were offered the tour app to use on a self-guided tour. Instead, we opted to drive to the Angel Oak (we also recommend, and free) about 7 miles away and come back in 90 minutes. So glad we did! We paid twice the amount for a not-so-great 90 minute Supernatural Tour in Charleston the night before--the one benefit was, our tourguide for that tour recommended we check out McLeod Plantation. Jeff clearly cares about providing a stellar, interpretive tour. We couldn't say enough about his knowledge level and his approach to and respect for the Gullah culture. He allowed everyone to form their own opinion and didn't make it political (wish our tourguide the night before had done the same!). Great job Jeff (!!) and other staff were very helpful too!…

This was our first, and possibly our last, plantation tour. Plantations are creepy. There's nothing about a plantation tour that is actually reflective of the historical context that is pleasant or charming, but my husband and I couldn't imagine going on one that was white washed and deviated from the brutal and dehumanizing enterprises that they were. Jeff, our guided/interpretive tour guide, did a marvelous job making sure to set expectations up front about how difficult and uncomfortable the tour may be for some. He also made sure to tie the history and evolution of the plantation to contemporary experiences of racism and displacement, especially as it relates to the Gullah Geechee. Jeff was so kind to speak with my husband and I for what seemed like an hour about reparations to the living descendants of the enslaved people who worked and died on McLeod plantation. He was so generous with his time and expertise.…
