Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The people who worked inside were most open and helpful regarding the theater and it's history. They suggested where to look and what to pay attention to. Very nice, amazing transformation from rubble to a functional theater.

Took one of the Many Ghost Tours of Charleston and this was one of the Stops. We heard stories about Ghosts which haunt the theater after suffering a tragic death. Love the design and historic architecture. The building is well preserved and has a great historical past making this one of the most visited locations downtown.

Play is adorable and the acting superb. Perfect in these distressing times. Theatre is quaint and beautiful. So happy we chose to see this production.

We went to see the play The Adams Family, which was excellent. We have been to many NYC Broadway plays and this was comparable. The theater is a beautiful, historic theater.

The show was fun and the performances were all very good. The theatre is beautiful inside with great lighting and sound. My only complaint is the seating. It is very tight and not very comfortable. I know this is a historic venue and I have no regrets about going. Just would have enjoyed it more with a skoosh more room and padding.

We were visiting Charleston and saw this playing so we got tickets. We went to see Addams Family and could not be more impressed with the cast, costumes, and set design!! We would love to again if we lived in town. The talent is out of this world!

Interesting history of the building. It was opened in 1736 in the first building specifically built for performing arts in the United States. It is still in use today!

We saw the Spoleto Festival opera “Unholy Wars” at the Dock Street Theatre. Although the production was excellent, with great opera singers, the supertitles were too small, compared to those at the Gaillard Center, where we saw “La Boheme”, so my wife had difficulty reading them and easily following the story. Fortunately, we had attended the Zoom discussion about this opera, so she did have some idea about it. The Spoleto operas are more suitably presented at either the Gaillard Center or Sottile Theatre, than at the Dock Street Theatre, which is ideal for theatrical productions, but not operas.

We have been attending performances of Charleston Stage since moving to South Carolina in 2004, and have found most of them to be superb. Now that we have moved from Myrtle Beach to the Charleston area, we are looking forward to continue attending performances at the Dock Street theatre, although we are very disappointed with the 2022-2023 selections. Although we had previously seen “Kinky Boots” during a visit to Toronto, this performance had excellent acting, singing, dancing, costumes, and scenery, and was totally enjoyable.

We were there for a proformance of "Black Pearl Sings" and cannot say enough about the play and the actors. It was a beautifully written story about the struggles of two women, one Gullah and one white. It was accented with folk songs by both women that were beautifully done.

Yes, we needed to wear masks and show proof of vaccine, but we had done the same for a Kathleen Madigan performance in February. The theatre was lovely and very well maintained. Parking can be a little tricky.
