Fort Sumter is a small national monument, however it is loaded with history. The views are beautiful as well. Its about a 40 minute ferry ride from Liberty Square and worth a stop for sure.

Everything about our trip to Ft. Sumter was great. You board a boat in Charleston and it takes 25 minutes to get out to the fort. During the boat ride there are pre-recorded speeches that will tell you about the history of the island, Charleston and the surrounding area. During the ride you may be lucky enough to watch dolphins... More

The visit begins with about a half hour boat taxi to the monument. Very smooth ride and they offer food and drinks. The monument is well preserved and offers a lot of information! Great for history buffs!

For a long time I have desired to visit Ft. Sumter as I have read widely about the Civil War. My disappointment has to do with the absence of National Park Service staff to help interpret what one is seeing. I understand budget constraints, but it shows glaringly here at Ft. Sumter. The boat has a recorded introduction to the... More

If you are a history buff, this is a must! If you want a deal with a Charleston Harbor ride with dolphins galore, this is it! Fort Sumter is the start of the American Civil war in 1861 and if you have any interest in that, this is the place to go!

So, the actual site is incredible. A must see for any history lover. HOWEVER, the boat people give you exactly ONE HOUR to visit. That is not nearly enough time to take in the grounds, visit the fabulous museum, go to the gift shop, and take in the gravity of the place. We were so rushed and they charge a... More

This is hallowed ground. You can feel the intensity of what happened here and the important part it played in our country's history. We took the ferry from Charleston (next to the aquarium). It also runs from Patriot's Point, but the 11:00am early run is from the wharf next to the aquarium if you want the first ferry of the... More

We enjoyed visiting the fort. The museum has a lot to see. The park rangers were great to tell stories about the fort

With so much to do in Charleston, this is not a great use of several hours of your time. The 30-minute ferry ride (in each direction) takes up half your time and affords some nice views of Charleston and the nearby islands/peninsulas, but the fort itself offers little to see.
