Visiting Strawberry Hill is a truly theatrical experience. On approach to the building it is immediately apparent from the whitewashed walls and crenelations that this is no ordinary stately home. Once inside the visitor will find the rooms magically lit by a unique collection of renaissance glass with a gloomy castle-like hall and grey gothic staircase leading dramatically to the magnificence of the gallery and state apartment. Between 2007 and 2015 the structure of the building was saved from ruin and the eccentric interiors have been fully restored to their late 18th century style. The restoration project has won major awards from the European Union, the Georgian Group, RICS and RHS, and is shortlisted as 2015's Best Tourism Project at the British Guild of Travel Writer's Awards. As well as guided tours and self-guided visits, we also offer events and family activities as well as an excellent cafe and shop.

As a group of 20, we were fortunate to visit this lovely house out of season, when we could have a private tour of the house. It started with a welcome coffee/tea and we were then taken around in smaller groups, with the knowledgeable tour guides explaining the history of Horace Walpole's home, as well as the plans for it's... Excellent House with some amazing history to it. Good guide with guidebooks and a very enjoyable experience. Huge gardens. This is out of town and can be reached by bus or a short walk from Strawberry Hill railway station. as someone else has said there is good food and drinks at the Pope Alexander Pub, which has a huge glass... A little out of the way but well worth the visit, as the best attraction in the area. Amazingly restored Gothic residence. Good tour along with guide book. Many interesting features inside and out. Very friendly and informative staff. Gardens were also a feature. On site shop and cafe were good but also Alexander Pope pub around the corner on... More

Regardless if you are a local or a tourist looking for something to do but off the beaten path, it was a fantastic experience. Had an invite to go and took the chance with a "why not attitude." If you enjoy history and random facts this place is for you! Learning about the house was great, the people that lived... More

It may be out of town but Strawberry Hill House is a true hidden gem. Fascinating history to Walpole's Gothic Castle. He even wrote a guide to the house for his many visitors! During his lifetime guided tours were offered if you wrote and asked. However if he did not like your looks when you arrived at the door, he... More

Horace Walpole's mock-gothic house is made even better than it is by i) the enthusiastic and knowledgeable guides who are on each floor; and ii) the free booklet, which consists of Walpole's own guide for his visitors, supplemented by boxed comments and explanations. There is a small museum and shop and a very pleasant cafe, again with very good staff.... More
