About
Experience 800 years of history in a unique architectural setting! The exhibitions presented in the Werdenberg Museums offer audiovisual projections, audio guides and vivid presentations portraying the history of both the ruling classes at the castle and the common folk of the town. Werdenberg is one of the few surviving medieval timber house villages in Europe. The town is also on Switzerland’s heritage list of townscapes of national importance. They feature stories from behind castle walls, detailing the rise and fall of counts and bailiffs, the everyday life of knights and the gentry family that took over the castle. The Schlangenhaus Museum in the town is dedicated to the life of the townsfolk of Werdenberg. Every year, during the international festival Schlossmediale, the castle becomes the magnificent setting for concerts and art exhibitions. From April to October, visitors can choose between a variety of guided tours and attend special events.

Castle is 10min walk from the main road
Dec 2019
The castle is the high point of the smallest city in Switzerland. It is only a 10min walk from the city gate. The castle is located high enough to give a panoramic of the surrounding areas.

Beautiful

The castle itself is small but quite pretty. However, the views of the small lake and surrounding snow capped mountains are unbeatable.

Terrific in the summer
Aug 2018 • Couples
Visited Aug 2018 while staying at less than 3 minutes of walk from the Castle. Looks fantastic from the outside (we did not go in as it was closed) and the grapevines on the slope add immensely to its value! The medieval town that engulfs that castle is worth it too.
Recommended, especially for a reposeful summer evening as the sun gently goes down the slopes.

Impressed by the castle museum
Jun 2018 • Family
Our Swiss friends brought us here while we visited them. The grounds and surrounding areas are very pretty and I wasn't expecting much from the castle museum, but it was really interesting! The format which they showed the history (sort of like a light show) was not like anything else I had seen in a museum before. Lots of history and not crowded at all. We visited on a Saturday and were about the only people there. There is a small cafe which we bought drinks from. Very overpriced but when you're thirsty and desperate...

The views from the top of the castle are amazing!

Historical & beautiful
May 2018 • Couples
We were in Buchs (an hour by train from Zurich or a bit less than that from St. Gallen) to spend some time with a good friend. The village & the castle of Werdenberg is located in Buchs. Werdenberg has an 800 year history and is an enchanting place to visit. When we visited, the castle was closed - but we enjoyed the sights of the village - unique architecture.

Great

We didn't plan visiting this castle. We even didn't know about it before coming here and found it almost by coincidence, but finally it was a highlight of our stay in the area.
We truly enjoyed audio guide with a lot of effects, especially the castle history introduction with the shadow play. I truly recommend.

Castle Dominates The Small Village
Aug 2017 • Couples
Due to health issues we could not climb up to the castle. However we saw it from many angles as we toured around this medieval village. It looked superb even from a distance and would be well worth the climb up.

The village itself dates from the 1400s and has many houses from that time. It is well worth a walk around and there are many photo opportunities.
