Had a little trouble finding this amazing destination but it was worth the detour. Very interesting old home, garage/barn of vintage vehicles and the original Anderson Homestead. Learned so much about the history of original settlers and got to see a horse drawn herse. The tour guide was very informative and let us take our time wandering around exploring. Lots... More

Living history, in many ways - a very good spot to learn more about the area and how it was settled in the 19th century.

We walked from our hotel downtown to work our legs after the long drive. I expected a quick time ur of the museum but the docents were so good we were there 2 1/2 hours. It was great. Good historical information and interesting things I had never learned before. Glad we went for sure.

Talk about finding a jewel this is the perfect example. When we visited The Dalles we were told there wasn't much to do there but we visited this little museum at the top of a hill and found a treasure chest of interesting facts about the early days of Oregon and The Dalles area. They have done a great job... More

Interesting collection of artifacts including horse drawn vehicles. The volunteers who staff it are well informed and friendly. It takes 1-1.5 hours to go through and gives a good sense of early day The Dalles.

We found out about this museum late in the day, but decided to go there anyway. The volunteers who work there were more knowledgeable about The Dalles than the people who work at the Chamber of Commerce downtown. They were very helpful with directions and information. They took the time to show us around the Surgeon's House at the Fort... More

Knowledgeable Docent led our private tour of buildings. There were not other people visiting the museum that afternoon. This would be a good 1-2 hour activity.

I love this type of museum. The docents love their work and it shows. Shared information about the area, history, love of it all. Great guided tour through the Anderson Homestead. A must stop for the history buff...or anyone who wants to dig deeper into the local culture.

For history buffs, the main feature of this little museum is the fort’s doctor’s elegant house full of period furniture and other artifacts and photos. It also has a collection of 19th century modes of transportation. It could do more to tell the story of the purposes of the fort, most of which we got orally from a very helpful... More
