Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is just one big village with homeless and drug addicts. With complete tent camps. We were there during the day, 11 a.m. and couldn't walk in a straight line at the walking sides because there were people lying everywhere. We saw people use drugs in plain sight. Just walked for 3 blocks and we ran back to the car and left.

I think old town is a bit sketchy. A lot of homeless people were present and they actually threaten others. Some garbage were not taken care.

If you're looking to tally up some new life experiences you can definitely get some by walking a few blocks in Old Town. Caught an overdose in progress on my way to grab some pizza tonight. This is the largest population of homeless I have encountered in all of the cities I've visited and it is obvious that drug addiction is widespread. Unfortunately a large homeless population leads to a very unclean neighborhood as well. Having said that, while the situation in Old Town made me uncomfortable, I never felt threatened and there are some good restaurants in the area.

You should probably avoid this area unless you like homeless people, some of which appear insane. Many are only partially closed and seem to just be screaming for no reason. It was a bit unsettling.

Stay out of this area until the city gets its act together. Rival Covid and political protests have torn downtown apart. It is covered in graffiti, tent cities and empty buildings. It will take years to fix this mess. It used to be beautiful. It is now a shocking caricature of political inertia. At least pick up the trash. That should not be controversial.

I used to come here all the time when visiting Portland and it was perhaps my favorite part of the city. I was there yesterday and it is very rough now. Homeless people accosting pedestrians and blocking streets. This is NOT a place you should take your kids and should probably avoid yourself.

Enjoy getting a doughnut from Voodoo Doughnuts when I'm in the area. Love the idea of what the city is trying to do to make it a tourist attraction, but there are so many homeless people and people who are having loud conversations with the air as they walk along. People setting up camp on the street covered in tarps sleeping. It's definitely a challenge for the city...

I had been to Portland downtown recently and it was not a good experience.
This is what you should know. There are 3 main bridges - Hawthrone, Morrison and Burnside. The area across Burnside bridge is very shady and not safe. There are many homeless and some of them have put tent on the sidewalk and just lay there. During the day I did not feel safe so wondering how it is at night?
The area between Hawthrone bridge and Burnside bridge is good, though you may see some homeless here and there. Explore this area don't bother to visit old china town especially after 5pm.

We wanted to go to a sit-down Chinese restaurant, as opposed to the ubiquitous food carts all over Portland. China Town was recommended. Oh no! It was a dismal place with many homeless people, some of whom approached us aggressively. Most of the restaurants were closed. The ones that were opened looked dirty and had few customers. We quickly got out of there and ate near our Airbnb. We never did get Chinese food on this trip.

Witnessed a human slamming the H. If you can walk without notice or care I would then give this area a try. I will not be visiting this area of town again. Truly disturbing.
There are bars, dance clubs, and the iconic Darcelle XV that are worth a visit. My advice would be not to wander. Wandering is the point when it comes to the type of travel I prefer. Walk 10 feet from the closed off street party and you enter the lifestyle of addicts. Urine soaked walls. Syringe filled addiction. It is a haunting image soaked into my mind and this is a wealthy, populated, cities "normal". They are choosing to turn the blind eye.
