We enjoyed our visit of the Old Portland Underground, better known locally as the "Shanghai Tunnels!" Fascinating. These were a unique network of passages and thoroughfares that were used by unscrupulous individuals called "shanghaiiers" or "crimps", in addition to "white slavers" who grabbed women and sold them into prostitution. Ghosts are said to still haunt this mysterious urban landscape.

This is a great piece of history for Portland. What went on in those days is one of those parts of history that shouldn't be swept under the carpet. The location is fascinating and I learned a lot but there are a couple of things that could have made it better. Firstly, the ghost stories are great to start with... More

We went on the tour of the Underground. It was fantastic. We were not sure what we were going to learn while we were down there. You get a lot of history about the past the city is trying to hide. I highly recommend checking this out.

History, Scandals, Ghosts...sign me up! This is such a fascinating tour, learning about the hidden, seedy past of Portland. I had no idea these tunnels were here when I moved to Portland. In living here, I would hear so many stories about the tunnels, that I had to go check it out myself! I love to learn about history, the... More

Expected a walking tour underneath a part of the city. In reality you're only doing a little walking around underneath the restaurant where the tours start. The tour lasts about 100 minutes, most of which you're listening to stories. It's a neat gimmick but adjust your expectations accordingly. There is not a lot of ground covered, this is not a... Men were drugged by shanghaiers and sold to sailing ship captains as slaves; some never returned and those who did were never the same. White slavers kidnapped women and forced them into a life of prostitution, and they died of it. I stepped into one of the holding cells that are still in the Underground and stepped right back out!... More

Everyone should take this tour to get both a good look at the interesting history of Portland. Shanghai'ing was alive and well in this city from mid-1800s to mid-1900s. It was surreal to stand in the cell where kidnapped men had be held captive and see the artifacts of the time. They are also said to be haunted, although not... More

Underground. Was warm. Guide was great but of course everything he said started with last week I saw. Lots of good stories. They have hanging lights so it's a dimly lite tunnel. I really felt like we only went in a 50ft circle but it was cool. For $18 it was worth it. Would NOT take children to much to... More

Great thing to do, very interesting tour through historic underground Portland! Highly recommended! Not for young children under the age of 12. Pretty spooky but more on the fascination side. Incredible piece of history
