I loved walking this waterfront, with all the cute little shops and lots of places to eat. It was raining so I did not spend enough time there. Was thrilled to hear and see huge Sea Lions and discovered a beautiful boardwalk along the marina. Wish I had more time there. Will definitely explore more when it's not raining.

On the day before Thanksgiving, we wandered down to the bayfront to pick up a piece of salmon for the holiday meal. What a fun place! Lots of fun shops, a dispensary, Rogue Ales has a bistro there, sea lions on the docks down by the water's edge, boats coming in and unloading their catch, and a lot of activity going on. It was quite the day walking around there and we were able to find a market where we got our piece of salmon.

I had to go, because I wanted to see those sea lions. You do get to see them very close up. The Bayfront is quite touristy, but it was fun to walk around for a few hours.

Our advice is arrive early and get a parking spot on the street. Stroll and take in the sights; at 11, find a spot like Clearwater restaurant and get a table overlooking the port and soak it in

We walked around looking at all of the murals, soon we were talking with locals that were crabbing off public docks, chatting with other people visiting the area.
And of course enjoying the fresh seafood.

This area has challenging parking and the public restrooms are a bit scary, but the area is worth a visit. The great old bookstore just up the hill has closed but there are many fun shops on one side of the street and working canneries and warehouse businesses on the water side. You can view and hear the seals and sea lions that are nuisance visitors to the wharves.

We drove through trying to find a parking place. This is around 3pm on a Thursday.
We passed the restaurant where we wanted to eat & kept going BECAUSE WE COULDN'T PARK!!!
There were some places to buy seafood & some shops. I can't tell you how much I liked them BECAUSE WE COULDN'T PARK!!!!
Get it together Newport, geez.

The place is a bit outdated but may be that is why you need to visit it. There are a lot of places to it local see food and watch the boats coming and going and unloading their harvest.

Good place to buy fresh fish but it's rather expensive and they don't have a lot of those fish available for purchase

Hoping to head out to Oregon next summer (May-September). I'm just curious what the best time of year is to see the sea lions at the docks? I know there's a period of time in which they migrate south, I just want to make sure I go during a time when I'll be more likely to see them. Thanks

Check the Embarcadero. It's mostly (or perhaps all) condos, but I think they do rent them out to individuals.

Can you fish off the dock or any where without using a boat

There are at least two docks on the north side of the bay (where the sea lions congregate) where you can fish and crab.

I also saw people with fishing gear on the pier. I would sure check the local laws or risk a fine and confiscation of your stuff. Google would be a good start.

What time of day were you there to see the fishing boats come in and watch the fishermen clean the fish? I love fishing boats!

Are the shops open on Sundays in October

We were there on a Sunday in July, and I think eveything along the bayfront was open, but not everything in the rest of Newport.
