If the outdoor views don't leave you slack-jawed, the visitor center will. Cool, huge exhibit of paleontology from the region, mostly post-Jurassic periods. Loads of fossils. I've now been to all three units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno, Sheep's rock, and Painted Hills....More

The visit to the Fossil Beds National Monument was fantastic. The scenery is out of this world and the displays in the center were as interesting as they were educational.

Nice to see but a lot of driving to go between the 3 different units and the whole area is isolated. It would be a good camping or RV trip as there is essentially no overnight lodging. Best to go in spring or fall when...More

Beautiful. Make sure you go down to the trail heads to get up close with the painted hills. Sunny days are best.

I honestly don't know. Your best bet is to call the Monument's Visitor Center or perhaps the community of John Day's visitor center or Chamber of Commerce.
