While driving to Bend, Oregon from Idaho, we passed the John Day Fossil Beds area. We only had a chance to see Sheep Rock and the painted hills. Absolutely Breathtaking. My only wish is that we had more time at the painted hills as it was close to sunset when we arrived. Spectacular views! Would highly recommend.

It was a last minute decision to visit the Fossil Beds, and we were SO happy we did. As an amateur photographer, I could have spent the entire day looking at the multi-colored hills and hiking the many trails. If landscape turns you on, then this is the place for you!

I was only able to spend half of a day here, but my wife, daughter, and I had a total blast. We didn't stop inside the visitor center, so I cannot speak for that. However, the hiking was top notch. The trails were not very grueling and the scenery on them was top notch. The only thing that I can... More

If the outdoor views don't leave you slack-jawed, the visitor center will. Cool, huge exhibit of paleontology from the region, mostly post-Jurassic periods. Loads of fossils. I've now been to all three units of the John Day Fossil Beds, Clarno, Sheep's rock, and Painted Hills. Each one is different and has completely different things to offer. The Clarno unit is... More

The visit to the Fossil Beds National Monument was fantastic. The scenery is out of this world and the displays in the center were as interesting as they were educational.

The staff was extremely helpful. The outside bathroom are always clean and well stocked. It is an amazing place to stretch your legs and the views are gorgeous. The museum is very informative with tons of fossils and samples. Start you National Park Passport. It is a cheap and easy family activity plus it gets you outside and learning about... More

This area is so beautiful and so geographically unique that it just needs to been seen to be believed. We visited all three units and drove the scenic highways in between. The weather was crisp and clear and perfect. Make sure you visit the visitors center to see the fossils.

Nice to see but a lot of driving to go between the 3 different units and the whole area is isolated. It would be a good camping or RV trip as there is essentially no overnight lodging. Best to go in spring or fall when it's not as hot as summer. We were there the last week of September and... More

Loved this area. Beautiful even in the rain. A very unique area to visit. We ooohed and aaawwed, took lots of pictures. It is about 60 miles west of John Day but was worth the trip even though we were to travel east that day. Highway 26 in Oregon is full of beauty and a nice road to travel on.

This is one of the most amazing attractions we have ever visited, and to think it's right here in the Pacific Northwest! The monument consists of three sections, Painted Hills, Clarno, and Sheep Rock. The Painted Hills Unit is an area with beautiful red, gold and white hills, some striped. There is easy access for cars and an easy trail... More
