This place was so cool! It's definitely worth a stop on the way through. If you climb up you can peep through the windows that tell you what mountain you're looking at! Definitely worth stopping!

This stop is excellent for adults and children. The views are great, and the educational path through the lava is one of the best I've ever walked. No one should miss this opportunity. The educational trail is all paved but a bit steep in places....More

Decided to take the 242 as we wanted to get away from the normal state roads. Well the 242 is full of tight turns & twists and something different around nearly everyone of them. And then you get to this at the McKenzie Summit. Well...More

We decided to take the road less traveled, or so we thought. It is a road full of twists and turns, with every turn a new view. This observatory offers views in all directions. There are small windows to view the different mountain. There were...More

We stopped here during a driving loop tour out of Sisters. Wow.... I've never seen anything like the lava flows in the mountains. The observatory and interpretive trail are both well done. Nice views in all directions and there are indicators to help you identify...More

A friend recommended we stop to see this while in the area. It's a volcano rock area where vegetation has yet to take over. It's quite interesting. An observation tower has been built out of the rock, and windows have been designed to point one's...More

We drove up the pass to Dee Wright Observatory, and were a bit surprised to see the many bicyclers also doing this very uphill road climb! Of course, they were all sitting on the ground resting later when we finished the walk around the observatory,...More

Stopped here on 08/08, early morning (8ish) on the way to the valley. No one else here. What a unique place. The "observatory" is not an observatory in the traditional sense. It is a structure built with the readily available lava. The top of the...More

If you are at all into volcanoes, you must go here. Oregon 242 is very scenic with typical mountain terrain and forests, and then you come to the lava flow from Little Belknap Crater. OMG. It is surreal. The view of the surrounding cascade peaks...More

A little difficult to get to, if only because of the twists and turns and elevation changes. But, it is definitely worth the effort. The lava field is amazingly large. The views are outstanding. The observatory itself was so cool to walk up to. Glad...More

The Observatory is in the Willamette National Forest on Route 242. That road is part of the McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway and is a beautiful drive with places along the way to stop and do short hikes to waterfalls and... More

I didn't see any dogs but you should check the Oregon park service site since it would be one of theirs. I thought dogs are allowed if leashed - but still would be an easy thing to check
