English tour
Jul 2021
Our trip in the area concentrated on WWI and WWII historical locations, and the visit to this fort was one of the must-haves. My friend booked the visit for a Friday afternoon, when, according to the website, there's an English tour available.
When we arrived, it turned out there's no English tour, and only one member of our group spoke French.
Anyway, we said we'd just go in with one of the French-speaking groups, and we'd try to make the best of it, but the wonderfully obliging staff/volunteers of the fortress wouldn't hear of this.
A lady came to us and told us to wait, because eventually there'd be an English-language tour, and though it wasn't very clear what would happen and when, after about half an hour the lady produced a tour guide - Frédéric - who accepted the challenge to be the guide to our group of English speakers - as we learned from him, it was maybe the second English tour he did, but I must say that the speed of these arrangements and Frédéric's inexperience with English tours was no problem! In fact, he gave us a full, two and a half our long tour of the fortress, and it was one of the best guided tours I've had in my life. We learned a lot of interesting info, and as this turned out to be a private tour just for the 5 of us, we had all the opportunities to ask questions.
A great experience! Thanks a lot for it!

Maginot line visit
Oct 2020
This sightseeing was very good and extremely well performed by our guide Paul.
We heard stories from both military and humanitarian sides during 1940-1944.
The Maginot-line is an impressive construction and Hackenberg is very well maintained. I highly recommend a visit.

No translation
Sep 2020 • Couples
We made a reservation up front through the English part of the website. On arrival at the fort we seemed to be the only non-French speakers. We asked for translation at the front desk but only received 3-4 pages of text with some very general information, which I can also lookup on wikipedia. As we speak 3 languages: English, German and Dutch we decided to take our chances in the hope that some information could be translated for us, but no effort was made. The guide seemed to have a lot to tell in French, but nothing in another language. Because of this our tour was extremely boring and we were glad to be back outside again. This is very sad because it all seemed very interesting.

I would only go back if translation can be arranged because I am very interested in these things. My wife decided she would never again waste another sunny day for the tour in the fort.

Advice for the organization: tell people up front that the tour is not worth the effort when there is no translation for them.

Despite all our members' best efforts to satisfy our visitors, we are sorry we were unable to offer you an English language tour on Monday. I apologize for that. Our association makes every effort to welcome our visitors in German and English for a maximum number of days depending on the availability of our guides. However, in this context of a pandemic 19, it is difficult for us to guarantee this service 7 days a week. Counting on your understanding.

Great informative visit
Jul 2020
This site is kept in excellent condition by volunteers and is a fascinating part of history to discover. I am writing the review in English for a larger audience, but we took the tour in French and the guide was great, keeping a fun atmosphere while seriously explaining the history of the place.
We knew to dress for underground conditions, but the train ride is quite chilly, so make sure to bring very warm clothing just in case.
This place is struggling to keep it up due to the COVID-19 environment, and is definitely worth preserving - so go visit (responsibly) if you are in the area.

Excellent tour in all three languages.

Very interesting and thorough tour of the fortification, and an experience unlike most other. People who have difficulty in walking can get a wheelchair, and are able to complete the whole tour except for the part outside of the fortification, which is only a small part of the tour itself.

Passionate Hackenberg tour
Jul 2020
We enjoyed visiting the Ouvrage Hackenberg, dug into the Hackenberg hill. By taking the internal train to combat block 9 you understand how big this fortress is.
Our guide Alain gave a passionate tour as his grandfather was a soldier at the Ouvrage during WW2.
Seeing the turret in block 9 in action, from the in- and outside, was impressive.
Be prepared that most guides only speak French and make sure to bring warm clothes, as the tour takes 2,5 hours and the inside temperature is 12 degrees C all year round.
